- Lighthouse of Chania - The Chania Lighthouse, built in 1864, is the oldest operational lighthouse in the Mediterranean and a key landmark of Chania. While entry is not permitted, it can be admired from the port.
- Firkas Fortress - Located on the northwest side of Chania’s port, Firkas Fortress was built between 1610 and 1645 to defend the Venetian harbor from raiders. After Chania fell to the Turks in 1645, it was renamed “Firka,” meaning “barrack” in Turkish. The fortress housed six consecutive domes for large cannons aimed at the harbor entrance. It served as a prison until the Greek Civil War in the 20th century and was the seat of the military governor during Ottoman rule. The Greek flag was raised here in 1913, marking Crete’s reunion with Greece. Today, the Maritime Museum is located at the fortress entrance.
