Falasarna Beach - Situated in the western region of Cape Gramvousa, Falassarna Beach is renowned for its stunning beauty. At the northern tip of the beach lie the remnants of the ancient Greco-Roman city of Falassarna. This bay is celebrated as one of Greece’s most famous beaches, having been recognized as the best beach in Crete and among the top 10 beaches in Europe in the past.
Falassarna covers a vast area and comprises five consecutive beaches, with the two central ones being the most popular.
The main beach, known as Pacheia Ammos, is an exotic stretch of coastline measuring an impressive 1 km in length and 150 meters in width. This picturesque location offers visitors endless opportunities for relaxation, adventure, and exploration.
- Ancient Falassarna - The ancient city of Falasarna (or Phalassarna) is located at the western base of the Gramvousa peninsula and was a significant town in Crete during the Hellenistic and Roman periods. The city was renowned for its port, the only natural harbor in western Crete, constructed in a small lagoon.
In ancient times, it was known as Korikos, and the name Falasarna is believed to have been derived from the local nymph Falasarni.
The rival town in the area was Polirinia, which succeeded in making Falasarna its port after a century of conflicts (186 BC).
It is thought that Falassarna served as a haven for pirates, prompting the Romans to destroy the city in 69 BC and permanently seal the port, thus ending its illustrious history. Visiting this site is optional.
