Upon boarding, the first destination on this full-day excursion is Balos Beach, a lagoon of exceptional natural beauty situated at the far end of the Gramvoussa Peninsula, the westernmost point of Crete. This entire region has been designated as a protected area under the Natura 2000 program, and preserving its natural state is our utmost priority. We leave only footprints in the pink-white sand as we enjoy a swim in the turquoise waters of Balos and Gramvoussa Island before proceeding to our next destination, Menies.
This secluded cove is located on the northeastern shore of the Rodopou Peninsula, parallel to Gramvoussa. Menies is situated on the site of ancient Diktynna, which was the most significant temple dedicated to the goddess Vritomartis, believed to be the goddess Artemis. After a refreshing swim on the pebbly beach, the journey continues along the coast back towards Chania.
A stop at Thodorou Island is a must, as it is a protected sanctuary for the endangered wild Cretan goat, commonly known as the “kri-kri.”
