- Chania Town - The historic city of Chania is a remarkable monument of history.
Embark on a walking tour through the historic center of Chania, where the crossroads and cobblestone streets of various civilizations converge, starting at the Municipal Market. This market, which opened in 1913 on the site of the demolished Venetian bastion Piatta Forma, is a magnificent cruciform building housing over 70 shops offering a variety of local products. Next, explore “stivanadika,” one of Chania’s most popular tourist streets, where you can discover the leather market and the handmade traditional Cretan boots known as “Stivania.”
Visit the Municipal Art Gallery of Chania, the Temple of Eisodion, the Catholic Church of Chania, and the Temple of Agios Fragkiskos, which hosts the Archaeological Museum. Discover the Byzantine Walls of Kydonia, the remnants of the Venetian Monastery, and the church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli (1615).
At the end of the Kasteli citadel, the unique Venetian Port of Chania unfolds before you, featuring two groups of Venetian Neoria (14th-16th century) and the Great Arsenal, which has been fully renovated and now houses the Center of Mediterranean Architecture. On the opposite side, you’ll find the long harbor breakwaters with the small castle of San Nicolo, leading to the Egyptian lighthouse, a key feature of the port.
Walking west along Akti Topazi Street, stop at the Muslim mosque of Kiutzuk Hasan (1645), which hosts various exhibitions during the summer. Continuing along the seaside, you’ll encounter Fountain Square, and at the west end of the port lies Firkas Castle, where the Greek Flag was officially raised on December 1st, 1913, to mark Crete’s union with Greece. The castle is home to the Maritime Museum of Crete and the Historical, Folklore, and Archaeological Society of Crete.
Circumnavigating the castle, head up Theotokopoulou Street, where on the left, you’ll see the church of San Salvatore (15th-17th century), which houses the Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Collection of Chania. The traditional district of Topana, named after the Venetian powder magazine that once existed there (“top hane” in Turkish), begins here.
At the end of Theotokopoulou Street, descend Douka Street to reach the heart of the aristocratic neighborhood of the Venetian city. Here, admire the grand aristocratic houses of the Venetian and later Turkish nobility, as well as the beautifully architected buildings of Theofanous Street, which have been renovated and now serve as hostels. The Palazzo of the Renier family on Moschon Street, built in the 15th century, features a small family chapel of Agios Nikolaos, an impressive entrance with a Latin inscription, and the family crest.
Explore the old Jewish District or “Ovriaki,” home to the renovated, unique for Crete, Jewish synagogue “Etz Haim,” from the ancient Romaniotes Jews. Finally, it’s worth walking east of the port to see the historic Splanzia Square, which hosts the church of Agios Nikolaos (1204) with its Turkish minaret and the Renaissance temple of Agios Rokkos (1630).
