- Elafonissi Beach - Situated off the southwestern coast of Crete, approximately 75 kilometers from Chania town, Elafonisi beach and its small island are easily accessible from the mainland, often without even getting one’s feet wet. Historically, pirates used it to conceal their treasures (lafyra), which is how it got its name. The island, measuring about 1.3 km in length and 400 meters in width, is a protected nature reserve and features one of the most exquisite sandy beaches in Greece. Notably, Elafonisi was the sole Greek entry on Tripadvisor’s list of the world’s top 25 beaches in 2014. This is unsurprising given its dazzling white-pink sand, turquoise-white lagoon-like waters that shimmer in the breeze, and its exotic landscape with sparse vegetation contrasting the rugged Cretan mountains. Visitors can explore numerous small coves, sandy beaches, and intriguing rock formations on the island. It is also home to 110 plant species, including the rare and protected Androcymbium rechingeri.
- Falassarna Beach - Located in the western region of Crete, about 53 km from Chania and 13 km from Kissamos, Falasarna beach is a favorite among day-trippers. Its breathtaking beaches and clear turquoise waters are unparalleled. The beach has received numerous accolades for its beauty, amenities, and services. Its expansive sandy stretch is a major draw, allowing visitors to enjoy it even during peak season. Swimming in the pristine turquoise waters offers an unparalleled experience. The beach is well-equipped with umbrellas and sunbeds, though there are also free areas for those who prefer to bring their own gear. The most captivating feature is the stunning and unique sunset, considered one of the most beautiful in Greece, with an unobstructed view from the beach to the horizon.
- The Monumental Olive Tree of Vouves - The Olive Tree of Vouves is likely one of the oldest olive trees globally, still bearing fruit today. While its exact age is uncertain, tree ring analysis indicates it is at least 2000 years old, and scientists from the University of Crete estimate it to be 4000 years old. In 1997, it was designated a protected natural monument, and in October 2009, the Olive Tree Museum of Vouves was opened in a nearby 19th-century house, showcasing traditional olive cultivation tools. Since the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, olive branches “kotinos” from this ancient tree have been used for the Marathon winners’ wreaths in every Olympic game. Annually, over 20,000 visitors from around the world come to see this ancient tree.
