The Declaration of Independence was proclaimed here in 1776, it served as a British prison for nearly two years during the American Revolution, the US Constitution was ratified in South Carolina in 1788, and George Washington was hosted during a week-long visit in May 1791, among many other significant events.
- Rainbow Row - Discover the longest stretch of attached Georgian row houses in the nation. These buildings were mariners’ stores in the 18th and 19th centuries. They were restored in the 1930s during Charleston’s preservation efforts, featuring a vibrant Caribbean color palette.
- Old Slave Mart Museum - Originally known as Ryan’s Slave Mart in the 1850s, this site was an auction location for the interstate slave trade. The tour will cover Charleston’s involvement in the slave trade. The City of Charleston manages the museum, and tours are available on-site. The tour does not include entry into the building.
- French Huguenot Church - This stunning Gothic Revival structure from 1845 is home to one of the few practicing Huguenot (French Protestant) congregations in the country.
- Dock Street Theater - Entry is subject to availability. Built on the site of the first theater in the British colonies, the Dock Street Theatre, circa 1937, was restored from the old Planter’s Hotel, circa 1809. The Charleston Stage Company operates as the largest professional theater company in South Carolina, hosting approximately 120 performances annually.
- Charleston City Hall - Located on one of the “Four Corners of Law,” a term coined by Robert Ripley (Ripley’s Believe It or Not). Constructed in 1801 as a bank, it has served as City Hall since 1818 and is one of the oldest continuously operating city halls in the nation. On weekdays, visitors can enter the council chamber and view their collection at no charge.
- St. Michael’s Church - Entry is subject to availability. This is the oldest place of worship in the city, dating back to 1761. The tour will discuss Charleston’s religious history, both past and present. The building retains much of its original woodwork and features exquisite Tiffany stained glass windows. John Rutledge and Charles Cotesworth Pinckney, signers of the US Constitution, are interred in the churchyard.
- Nathaniel Russell House - Visitors can explore the garden of this elegant Federal-style townhouse built in 1808 and owned by Nathaniel Russell. Originally from Rhode Island, he was a prosperous merchant engaged in shipping.
- Edmondston-Alston House - Walk along the High Battery wall to admire the waterfront mansions and discuss the onset of the Civil War. Fort Sumter is visible from this vantage point. The Edmondston-Alston House has been in the family since 1838 and was a location where General Beauregard observed the bombardment of Fort Sumter with other spectators.
