Lukla - A domestic flight from Kathmandu to Lukla Airport offers a brief yet breathtaking journey. For the best views of the Himalayas, it’s recommended to sit on the left side of the plane. As the flight approaches the Khumbu region, passengers will witness the majestic hills and mountains. The landing at Lukla airport is particularly exhilarating.
Upon arrival in Lukla, the trek to Phakding begins. The trail descends from the airport via stone-paved stairs. The day’s trek involves no ascents, as the path winds through scenic trails shaded by Rhododendron trees, which are especially beautiful in spring when in bloom.
A suspension bridge over a landslide marks the first of many on the EBC trekking trail. After approximately three hours of walking through picturesque landscapes, trekkers will arrive in Phakding, where numerous teahouses are available.
Trek from Phakding to Namche Bazaar (3440m) 6-7 hours.
Namche Bazaar - The day begins around 7/8 am with a hearty breakfast. The trek from Phakding to Namche Bazaar follows the Dudh Kosi riverbank after leaving Phakding village. This day is notable for crossing multiple high suspension bridges over the Dudh-Kosi river.
Trekkers must obtain a Sagarmatha National Park trekking permit, with assistance from the guide at two checkpoints along the trail. The route passes through the villages of Tok-Tok, Monjo, and Jorsale, where many trekkers pause for lunch at a teahouse.
Namche Bazaar is a bustling hub with numerous teahouses offering excellent services and amenities, including bakeries, pubs, ATMs, and shops for trekking gear and accessories.
Trek from Namche Bazaar to Tengboche (3860m), visit Tengboche monastery. 5 hours.
Tengboche Gompa - After a satisfying breakfast in Namche, the trek resumes. Within 30 minutes, trekkers are treated to stunning views of Mt. Thamserku. Along the way, two stupas and a couple seeking donations can be seen. The first glimpse of Mt. Everest, along with Lhotse, Ama Dablam, and other peaks, is visible after some time.
Following a flat section, the trail descends to a river, where lunch is enjoyed before crossing a suspension bridge. In the Everest region, descents are often followed by ascents. A checkpoint before the ascent to Tengboche requires permit verification before the uphill climb begins.
After checking into a lodge, trekkers can visit the Tengboche monastery to hear the evening chants by Buddhist monks.
Trek from Tengboche to Dingboche (4410m), 5-6 hours
Dingboche - Following breakfast at Tengboche, the trek continues. The trail descends for about 30 minutes to Pangboche, then levels out. The route offers breathtaking views of the Himalayas and is frequented by many trekkers.
The trek passes through the villages of Somare and Orsho, with lunch at Somare. Further along, the Lobuche river is crossed before reaching Dingboche village.
Dingboche is a charming village known for its potato and barley cultivation, with stone walls protecting crops from cattle and cold air. The village offers spectacular views of Mt. Lhotse, Ama Dablam, and Taboche.
Trek from Dingboche to Lobuche (4940m), 6 hours.
Lobuche - The trek from Dingboche follows a beautiful trail uphill to a ridge, offering close-up views of Mt. Tawache and Cholatse. With the stunning Himalayas as a backdrop, the trek continues.
At over 4000 meters, caution is advised. Trekkers should walk slowly, stay hydrated, and descend to lower altitudes if signs of altitude sickness appear.
The trail passes through yak pastures in Thukla at 4620 meters, then climbs steeply to the Khumbu glacier’s terminal moraine. After approximately two hours, Lobuche is reached.
From Lobuche to Gorakshep (5164m) to EBC (5365m) and back to Gorakshep, 8 hours
Everest Base Camp Trail - The day to reach Everest Base Camp has arrived. After breakfast in Lobuche, the trek to Gorakshep begins. Initially, the trail is easy, but caution is advised.
Gorakshep offers teahouses for an overnight stay. After checking in and having lunch, the trek to the base camp begins.
Reaching Everest Base Camp at 5364 meters is a joyous moment for many trekkers. The base camp offers stunning views of the Himalayas and the Khumbu icefall.
After spending time at the base camp, the trek returns to Gorakshep for the night. Staying hydrated is important before sleeping in Gorakshep.
Hike from Gorakshep to Kala Patthar (5643m) and retreat trek to Pheriche (4370m), 8 hours.
Pheriche - The trek to Kalapathar, the best viewpoint of Mt. Everest, begins early, around 4 am. The trail is challenging, with an uphill climb on icy terrain. The sunrise view from Kalapathar is unparalleled.
Trekkers can capture photographs with Everest in the background and panoramic shots of the Himalayas. After enjoying Kalapathar, the trek returns to Gorakshep to collect luggage before descending to Pheriche.
Pheriche is a picturesque village surrounded by artistic rocky hills. It offers teahouses and guest houses for accommodation.
Trek from Pheriche to Namche Bazaar, 7 hours
Namche Bazaar - A long day of trekking begins with a hearty breakfast in Pheriche. The trail is scenic, leading to Debuche village, a small settlement with teahouses. From Debuche, the trail continues to Pangboche village.
Many trekkers stop for lunch in Pangboche. Afterward, the trek continues with an uphill climb to Tengboche. From there, the trail descends continuously, crossing a river before another ascent. The trail then flattens and becomes easier.
The beautiful trail leads back to Namche.
Trek from Namche to Lukla, 7 hours
Lukla - Although the trail is long, it is relatively easy. Some trekkers run on the return journey from the base camp, but this increases the risk of injury. It’s important to take it slow and avoid rushing, as most accidents occur on the return trip.
The descent from Namche begins with the famous uphill after the Hilary suspension bridge. After crossing the bridge, the trek continues gradually with other trekkers. Lunch is enjoyed at Tok Tok before continuing.
The joy of returning home is palpable. After a long trek, Lukla is finally reached. In Lukla, gifts for friends and family can be purchased, and there are bakeries and shops for relaxation.
Fly out from Lukla to Kathmandu.
Kathmandu - The final day of the trek involves flying back to Kathmandu, weather permitting. In case of bad weather, flight delays may occur.
The thrilling flight back to Kathmandu marks the end of the trek.
