Join this tour to discover the vibrant neighborhood of Georgetown. This area is known for its well-established specialized bazaars, featuring narrow winding streets, warehouses, covered wholesale markets, street stalls, and retail shops. Initially named ‘Black Town,’ it emerged in the late 1600s following the establishment of Fort St. George. Locals settled here to engage in trade and business with the fort. In the 1700s, part of Black Town was cleared to create an open space outside Fort St. George. The inhabitants of Black Town relocated just beyond this open area, which became known as New Black Town. By the mid-1800s, the open space (old Black Town) was utilized for the construction of the magnificent Madras High Court building. In 1910, during King George’s visit to India, Black Town was renamed Georgetown. Today, Georgetown remains a bustling market area, offering a wide array of goods including bangles, fabrics, fruits, vegetables, spices, stationery, jewelry, and more.
