Excellent not so small group walking tour - Excellent but exhausting tour of this amazing city. The guide was extremely knowledgable and imparted the history and fascination of the city beautifully. Possibly 14 is a bit too many in a ‘small’ group, but can highly recommend the experience.

Roman Soldier Tour of Deva (Chester) - Our guide was a woman Roman auxialiary from Dalmatia (other persona: An american student at the university). She was absolutely brilliant. Very knowledgeable, friendly and amusing. She showed us various sites ending at the amphitheatre with a demostration of how a defeaged gladiator would be killed.

Very interesting and informative tour - Tour was well worth doing as it developed our understanding of the life and impact the Romans had on Chester and their interactions with other parts of the UK. Julius, our guide, was very knowledgeable and approachable. Really interesting visit to site below the coffee shop. Explanation of the workings of Amphitheatre was really insightful.

Highly recommend - Went as a family to learn more about the Romans in Chester. We all loved this walking tour. All ages were catered for, and the length of the tour was great to keep the youngest entertained. Lucius was brilliant, very engaging and informative!

Ok tour, - It's ok, we were maybe with a bad group who wanted to show off their knowledge as opposed to letting the guide present to the group.

Nothing like the advert or promo photos - To read the advertisement and look at the promotional photos, you might reasonably expect (at the very least) your guide to be an entertaining, enthusiastic bloke in a fairly decent Roman gladiator costume, sharing a bit of local knowledge and taking you to some fairly interesting bits of Chester. Sadly, this was not our experience. We had an American (or possibly Canadian) young woman in a frankly naff costume - like seriously, the brush had broke of her helmet and the rest of the costume didn’t look Roman apart from having red bits - talking about “the Roman dudes” and referring to herself as “the destroyer of men”. An experience so dire, we felt compelled to leave after less than an hour. Nothing like the promo photos, and certainly didn’t evoke any feelings of being transported back in time. At one point you go to look at some sandstone blocks and a Roman wall painting… in the basement of a Pret A Manger. Comically bad.

Poor delivery of interesting material - I was led to believe the Roman walk of Chester was suitable to children. The roman soldier leading the tour knew his subject but the delivery was poor. It was difficult to follow for anyone who had very little knowledge of a Roman fort or society. The children who were between 4-13 were not addressed.
