Sailing Beyond the Skyline: A Chicago Lakefront Adventure

When the open road calls, I usually answer, but this time, the call came from the waters of Lake Michigan. Join me as I recount a private sailing adventure along Chicago’s iconic lakefront, where the skyline meets the sea.

Setting Sail on Lake Michigan

As someone who has spent countless hours on the open road, the idea of setting sail on Lake Michigan was a delightful departure from my usual travels. My husband and I, both seasoned travelers, decided to embark on a private sailing adventure along Chicago’s lakefront. The promise of a flexible itinerary and the chance to see the city from a new perspective was too tempting to resist.

We arrived at Navy Pier, a place steeped in history and bustling with life. The pier, with its storied past, reminded me of the many small towns I’ve visited, each with its own unique charm and tales to tell. As we boarded the Bernard, a beautiful vessel that would be our home for the next two hours, I felt a familiar sense of excitement, akin to the thrill of hitting the open road.

A Captain’s Expertise

Captain Mike, our guide for the day, was a true master of his craft. His knowledge of the Great Lakes and his passion for sailing were evident from the moment we set sail. He reminded me of the many locals I’ve met on my travels, each eager to share their love for their hometowns. Captain Mike’s anecdotes about Chicago’s skyline and the history of the lakefront added depth to our journey, much like the stories of Americana I’ve collected over the years.

The Bernard was equipped with all the comforts one could need for a leisurely sail. From Bluetooth speakers to a cooler stocked with cold water, every detail was thoughtfully considered. It was reminiscent of the well-planned road trips of my youth, where every stop was carefully chosen to enhance the journey. As we sailed past iconic landmarks like the Adler Planetarium and Soldier Field, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia for the open road, even as I marveled at the beauty of the open water.

A View Like No Other

The Chicago skyline, viewed from the water, was a sight to behold. The towering skyscrapers, each with its own story, stood as a testament to the city’s rich history and vibrant culture. As we sipped champagne and enjoyed a charcuterie spread, I was reminded of the simple pleasures of travel – the joy of discovery, the thrill of new experiences, and the comfort of familiar traditions.

Our sail on Lake Michigan was a reminder of the beauty that lies beyond the highways and byways of America. It was a chance to see a city I thought I knew from a completely new angle, much like the hidden gems I’ve uncovered on my road trips. As we returned to Navy Pier, I felt a renewed appreciation for the diverse landscapes and experiences that make up this great country.
