This natural wonder, nestled inside a cave, is renowned for its crystal-clear turquoise waters, illuminated by a beam of sunlight streaming through an opening in its dome, creating a magical visual effect.
History & Significance
Cenotes were considered sacred by the ancient Maya, as they represented portals to the underworld (Xibalbá) and vital sources of water in the heart of the jungle. The name Dzitnup comes from Yucatec Maya, though its exact meaning has been lost over time. According to local legend, Xkekén (meaning “pig” in Maya) refers to a story of a fleeing pig that accidentally discovered the hidden entrance to the cenote.
