On a pleasant Earth Day, during a sunny autumn evening, the volcano began to erupt, creating a stunning display in the sky. Alongside its neighbor Osorno, it is one of Chile’s most active volcanoes. Situated 11 km south of Lake Llanquihue and 30 km northeast of Puerto Montt in the Lake District of southern Chile, Calbuco volcano is primarily composed of blocky lava flows and tephra layers, with its summit marked by a 400-500 m wide crater. Debris avalanches from Calbuco have reached Lake Llanquihue. One of the most significant historical eruptions in southern Chile occurred at Calbuco in 1893-1894, concluding with the formation of a lava dome in the summit crater. Subsequent eruptions have expanded the lava-dome complex. The volcano last erupted on April 22, 2015. Calbuco Volcano ranks as the third most active volcano in the region, following Villarica and Llaima, standing at 2,003 meters above sea level.
