Begin your journey with a visit to Ana Kai Tangata, a cave adorned with roof paintings, named after the island’s history of cannibalism during wartime. Explore Rano Kau, a volcano offering a stunning panoramic view of the island, with a descent of 200m (656ft) to a picturesque lake.

Visit the ceremonial village of Orongo, where in the 18th and 19th centuries, a fascinating political ceremony took place annually. Tribes competed in a thrilling event involving cliff climbing and swimming to offshore islets to determine the island’s next leader.

Be captivated by the Vinapu site, showcasing exquisite rockwork reminiscent of the great Inca civilization of South America.

Proceed to Puna Pau quarry, the source of large scoria (red, cindery, basaltic lava stone) used for the adornments on many statues’ heads. Discover Ahu Akivi, a restored site featuring seven statues believed to represent the first explorers to the island. These seven moai are unique as they face the sea.

Easter Island, like many volcanic islands, is filled with lava tubes. Ana Te Pahu is one of the island’s most extensive networks, where you will learn how the ancient Rapa Nui people utilized these caves for living, water collection, agriculture, and protection from hostile visitors in the 18th and 19th centuries.
