- Hakone Shrine / Kuzuryu Shrine Singu - Hakone Shrine (箱根神社, Hakone Jinja) is located at the base of Mount Hakone, along the picturesque shores of Lake Ashi. Nestled within a lush forest, the shrine is marked by its impressive torii gates, with one prominently situated in the lake and two others along the main street of Moto-Hakone. A scenic path leads from the torii gate in Lake Ashi, ascending through lantern-lined steps in the forest to the main shrine building, which is serenely set among towering trees. The shrine is stunning year-round, especially when enveloped in mist. Another shrine, Mototsumiya (“original shrine”), is perched atop Komagatake, one of Mount Hakone’s peaks, accessible via the Hakone Komagatake Ropeway from Hakone-en or by hiking trails.
- Lake Ashinoko - Lake Ashinoko was created in the caldera of Mount Hakone following the volcano’s last eruption 3,000 years ago. Today, the lake, with Mount Fuji as a backdrop, symbolizes Hakone. The lake’s shores remain largely undeveloped, except for small towns in the east and north and a few lakeside resort hotels. The most spectacular views of the lake and Mount Fuji can be seen from Moto-Hakone (just south of the sightseeing boat pier), the Hakone Detached Palace Garden, and the sightseeing boats cruising the lake.
- Hakone Ropeway - The Hakone Ropeway (f10 - 7I1) is a key part of the Hakone Round Course, a favored way to explore Hakone. It links Sounzan Station (the end of the Hakone Tozan Cablecar) with Togendai Station (on the shore of Lake Ashinoko) and makes stops at Owakudani and Ubako stations. The ropeway is fully covered by the Hakone Free Pass. Gondolas depart every minute, accommodating around ten passengers each. The entire ropeway journey takes about 30 minutes, offering views of the active, sulfuric hot springs of the Owakudani Valley between Sounzan and Owakudani, and of Lake Ashinoko and Mount Fuji between Owakudani and Togendai, weather permitting. A gondola transfer is required at Owakudani, but not at Ubako. Admission is 1480 yen (one way).
- Hakone Museum of Art - The Hakone Museum of Art (箱根美術館, Hakone Bijutsukan), situated in Gora, was established by Okada Mokichi in 1952. Its sister museum, the MOA Museum of Art, was later constructed in Atami City on the Izu Peninsula. The museum primarily showcases Japanese ceramics from prehistoric times through the Edo Period (1600-1868), including several large earthenware and ceramic pieces, such as a haniwa burial statue designated as an Important Cultural Property.
- The Hakone Open-Air Museum - The Hakone Open-Air Museum is Japan’s first open-air art museum, created in Hakone to blend nature and art. Artworks are displayed throughout the expansive 70,000 square meter site, surrounded by beautiful trees, grass, and mountains. It is a delightful experience for all ages, from families with children to solo adult travelers. Admission is 2000 yen.
- Owaku-dani Valley - Owaku-dani is an active volcanic area that fuels the local hot springs. Visitors can take the ropeway over the volcano to the observatory to learn about this significant volcano and enjoy one of the black boiled eggs, which are said to grant long life!

A great day in the Japanese countryside with views of Mount Fuji - Our Driver Sohail did a great job. He was very helpful and we arranged to leave early and miss the rush hour. Wonderful views and the highlight was our speed boat trip on the lake.
