Explore the historic Kagurazaka area, developed by the Shogun 400 years ago, and still one of Tokyo’s six Geisha districts. The nearby Institut Francais adds a unique blend of traditional Japanese and French atmospheres. The lively shopping streets offer a wonderful chance to observe the daily lives of ordinary Japanese people and shop like a local. - Meiji Jingu Shrine - Meiji Shrine is dedicated to Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken. When the Tokugawa Shogunate returned power to the Emperor, marking the start of the Meiji era, Japan made significant progress in aligning with other developed nations. The education system was established, railways expanded, and Western-style dining attire became fashionable. Emperor Meiji, who championed these advancements, was beloved by the people, and after his passing, Meiji Shrine was constructed in his honor. Now, 100 years later, it has become a magnificent forest, offering a serene and refreshing atmosphere.
- Takeshita Street - Visit a must-see destination for every Japanese teenager. In the 1970s, the Takenoko-zoku, a group known for their eccentric costumes and street dancing, captured the imagination of Japanese youth. Today, Takeshita Street remains the heart of youth culture, with both sides of the 350m road filled with everything teens adore. Enjoy sweets like crepes and strawberry candy, as well as snacks and drinks. The street features shops with unique costumes and numerous second-hand clothing stores, showcasing the vibrant spirit of Japanese youth.
- Senso-ji Temple - Sensoji Temple is Tokyo’s oldest temple. The Kaminarimon Gate, famous for its large red lantern, is a fantastic photo opportunity. Sample Japanese sweets/snacks or find great souvenirs. Sensoji Temple is rich in Japanese culture, offering experiences like the unique Japanese omikuji (fortune telling), purification rituals, and more. Learn about the differences between temples and shrines.
- Uenokoen - Visit Ueno Park, the site of Kan’ei-ji Temple, which was protected by the Tokugawa Shogunate during the Edo era. Ueno Toshogu Shrine, where the first Tokugawa Shogun, Ieyasu, is enshrined, features beautiful sculptures and gold-plated shrine buildings, reflecting the Shogun’s power. This location was the site of a civil war when the Shogun returned power to the Meiji Emperor, making it a significant place in Japanese history. Enjoy cherry blossom viewing during the season.
- The East Gardens of the Imperial Palace (Edo Castle Ruin) - Explore the ruins of Edo Castle, where the massive stone walls and elegant watch towers still stand.
