- Chorrillos - Our journey begins at the Chorrillos Artisanal Fishing Pier, a key hub for marine products in the capital and surrounding areas. Historically, this area has been centered around the sea, being the first spa in Peru during the Castilian era. In the past, Lima’s walled city received daily deliveries of mullet and croaker, carried in baskets by fishermen’s wives, whose donkeys trotted along the cobblestone streets to deliver goods door-to-door.
- Mercado nro 1 de Surquillo - Next, we will explore the Surquillo Market, which has become a culinary haven for international food enthusiasts, thanks to the acclaim of renowned Peruvian chef Gastón Acurio. Open daily, the market offers a vast array of foods and spices, including exotic Amazonian fruits, potatoes and chilies from the Andes, fresh coastal fish and seafood, and various meats, such as alpaca and the renowned guinea pig.
Continuing our culinary adventure, we will visit two popular fast-food restaurants featured in the documentary “Street Food Latin America.” These Huariques are beloved by both locals and tourists for their unique specialties.
- Mercado nro 1 de Surquillo - At La Huerta Chinen, known for its Creole fusion, we will savor the famous Limeña causa, a dish of mashed yellow potatoes seasoned with lime, chili, and filled with chicken.
At Alto K Pez, specializing in seafood, we will indulge in the marine trio: fish ceviche, rice with seafood, and pork rinds.
- Centro Historico de Lima - After satisfying our taste buds, we will explore Lima’s historic center, strolling through its ancient streets and admiring its stunning balconies, churches, and colonial mansions, including the main square, the cathedral, the government palace, and the San Francisco convent with its catacombs.
We will then treat ourselves to the famous Spanish churros, filled with dulce de leche or pastry cream and dusted with sugar. Following this, we will visit a local bar to learn how to make Peru’s iconic drink, the Pisco Sour, crafted from grape pisco, lime, gum syrup, egg white, and angostura bitters.
To conclude our tour, we will head to the Chabuca Granda mall to taste Peruvian donuts, known locally as picarones, made from sweet potato dough and served with honey.
