From Waves to Waterfalls: A Coffee Adventure in Puerto Rico’s Mountains
Trading my surfboard for a coffee cup, I embarked on a journey through Puerto Rico’s lush mountains with the Jíbaro Coffee Tour. This adventure promised a unique blend of culture, history, and, of course, coffee.
A Scenic Drive Through Puerto Rico’s Heart
As someone who spends most of his time chasing waves and exploring the vibrant coastlines of the Caribbean, I decided to take a detour from my usual beach escapades and dive into the lush, mountainous heart of Puerto Rico. The Jíbaro Coffee Tour promised a unique blend of culture, history, and, of course, coffee. The journey began with a scenic drive through the Cordillera Central, Puerto Rico’s central spine, offering breathtaking views that rival even the most stunning ocean vistas.
Our guides, Tristan and John, were not just knowledgeable but also incredibly personable, sharing stories and insights about the island’s rich history and culture. The drive was peppered with laughter and friendly discussions, making the journey as enjoyable as the destination. We even made a pit stop at a quaint roadside café, where the local flavors and aromas set the tone for the day ahead.
Discovering Hidden Gems
One of the highlights of the tour was our visit to Cascada Las Delicias, a hidden waterfall tucked away from the usual tourist trails. As someone who loves the water, I couldn’t resist taking a quick dip in the refreshing pool beneath the falls. The crisp mountain air and the sound of cascading water created a serene atmosphere that was both invigorating and calming.
The drive continued with winding roads and steep hills, offering a glimpse into the mountain life of Puerto Rico. Each twist and turn revealed new vistas, each more stunning than the last. It was a reminder that the island’s beauty extends far beyond its sandy shores.
A Coffee Lover’s Dream
Arriving at Hacienda Prosperidad, a fourth-generation family-owned coffee farm, felt like stepping back in time. The farm exuded a sense of serenity and nostalgia, with its rich history and dedication to the art of coffee-making. We were greeted with a warm cup of cappuccino and a delightful charcuterie board, setting the stage for an immersive coffee experience.
Walking through the plantation, we learned about the meticulous process of handpicking, sun-drying, and roasting coffee beans. The highlight was the hands-on experience of roasting, grinding, and brewing our own cup of coffee. As someone who thrives on the thrill of catching the perfect wave, this was a different kind of exhilaration—one that engaged all the senses.
The day concluded with a visit to a charming rooftop restaurant, where we enjoyed a delicious meal with panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. It was the perfect ending to a day filled with discovery, laughter, and a deeper appreciation for the island’s cultural tapestry.
This adventure was a reminder that while the ocean will always be my first love, there’s a whole world of experiences waiting to be explored beyond the shoreline. Until the next wave, or in this case, the next cup of coffee!
