After a 50-minute drive from the port, arrive at Montefiascone, which offers stunning panoramic views of Lake Bolsena, the largest volcanic lake in Europe. This area is renowned for its vineyards and the famous Est! Est!! Est! wine, named after a fascinating medieval legend. According to the tale, in 1111 AD, German King Henry V traveled to Rome for his coronation, accompanied by his wine-loving bishop, J. Defuk. The bishop’s servant, Martino, was assigned to find the best taverns along the route, marking the good ones with “Est” (It is here!). Upon reaching Montefiascone, he found the wine so exceptional that he marked it with triple exclamations: Est! Est!! Est!!! After 15 minutes, arrive at “Civita Bagnoregio,” also known as the “dying city” because the land it stands on is gradually eroding and will eventually vanish as it crumbles into the Calanchi Valley.
