As the rain gently taps on the cobblestones of Coimbra, families can find solace in the city’s rich cultural tapestry. The weekend of March 15th and 16th promises a cozy escape into the heart of Portugal’s history, perfect for those traveling with children. Start your Saturday with a Bussaco and University Tour that kicks off at 8:00 AM. This private tour offers a deep dive into the architectural splendor of Bussaco Palace, nestled amidst lush forests. The palace’s intricate designs and the surrounding natural beauty provide a magical backdrop, even on a rainy day.
The tour continues to the University of Coimbra, one of Europe’s oldest universities. Here, families can explore the Joanina Library, a treasure trove of rare books that will captivate both young and old. The library’s grandeur is a testament to the city’s storied past, offering a unique educational experience for children. As you wander through the university’s historic halls, the rain outside becomes a distant memory, replaced by the warmth of knowledge and history.
Reviewed on 2023-11-04: Coimbra and Bussaco trip - We had a lovely time visiting in queenborough and Bussaco Palace from Porto. Even though it was a rainy day, we had a great guide, Carlos, who was a great historian and excellent driver. We really loved the beautiful university library and Bussaco palace was extraordinarily gorgeous. Carlos also took us down a trail in the forest that was magical. Thank you for a wonderful day!
A Journey Through Time in Tomar
Sunday invites families to embark on a Tomar and Coimbra Tour starting at 8:30 AM. This tour is a gateway to the legendary world of the Knights Templar, with Tomar as its historical heart. The Convent of Christ, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a highlight of the tour. Its architectural beauty, blending Romanesque, Gothic, and Manueline styles, offers a visual feast that will intrigue both parents and children.
The tour also includes a visit to the Synagogue of Tomar and the Old Cathedral of Coimbra, each site offering a glimpse into Portugal’s diverse religious history. As you explore these historic landmarks, the rain outside enhances the atmosphere, adding a touch of mystery and romance to the experience. The tour’s private transportation ensures comfort, with amenities like on-board WiFi and bottled water, making it a stress-free adventure for families.
Reviewed on 2024-06-08: The best day, with a fantastic host - James was an outstanding tour guide who deviated from the Coimbra itinerary to give our daughter (a scholar of ancient Rome) a tour of the amazing ruins of a Roman city in nearby Conimbra. The city was occupied in the 100s and the mosaics are fantastic, as is the museum. Our first stop in Tomar was equally wonderful, as we toured the romantic castle headquarters of the Knights Templar (circa 1100) and the baroque convent within its walls. Again, we loved James.
Cozy Cafés and Cultural Corners
After a day of exploring, Coimbra’s cozy cafés offer the perfect retreat from the rain. Families can unwind with a warm cup of Portuguese coffee or indulge in a pastel de nata, a traditional custard tart that is sure to delight the kids. The city’s vibrant café culture provides a welcoming atmosphere, where parents can relax while children enjoy a sweet treat.
For those seeking more cultural immersion, Coimbra’s museums and galleries are a must-visit. The Machado de Castro National Museum, with its impressive collection of Roman artifacts, offers an educational experience that complements the historical tours. Meanwhile, the city’s art galleries showcase contemporary Portuguese art, providing a creative outlet for families to explore together.
As the weekend draws to a close, the rain-soaked streets of Coimbra reveal a city that embraces its weather, offering indoor adventures that are both enriching and enjoyable. Whether you’re exploring ancient libraries or savoring local delicacies, Coimbra promises a memorable family getaway, rain or shine.
