University of Coimbra - Begin your visit to Coimbra at the University of Coimbra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Enter the Paço das Escolas, where you’ll find the Joanina Library, São Miguel Chapel, Capelos Room, Medieval and Academic Prison, Weapons Room, Private Examination Room, and University Tower.
Founded in 1290 by King D. Dinis, the University of Coimbra is the oldest Portuguese-speaking university and one of the oldest in the world.
With 730 years of history, the University of Coimbra is a significant institution in the history of Portugal and the entire Portuguese-speaking world, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013 for its unique material and immaterial heritage. -
Old Cathedral of Coimbra (Se Velha de Coimbra) - After leaving the University, head towards Sé Velha (Old Cathedral of Coimbra).
Construction of the Old Cathedral began in the 12th century under Master Roberto, who was also overseeing the works of the Cathedral of Lisbon at the time. The Romanesque church, built from yellow limestone, is situated on a slope and features three aisles, a prominent transept, and a threefold headboard. The single-floor cloister on the southern side of the church was constructed at the beginning of the 13th century. - Praca Oito de Maio - This square is named after the day in 1834 when liberal troops entered Coimbra. It features buildings from the 16th, 17th, and other centuries, including the Monastery of Santa Cruz, one of the city’s landmarks.

Igreja de Santa Cruz - Explore Praça 8 de Maio, where you’ll find the Monastery of Santa Cruz de Coimbra (free entrance to the church), the National Pantheon, and one of Coimbra’s oldest monuments, founded in 1131. The first two kings of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques and his son, D. Sancho I, are buried in this Monastery (tickets not included).

It was later refounded by Queen Isabel of Aragon, the Holy Queen, who wore the Poor Clare’s habit after becoming a widow.

It was in the Paço of the Santa-Clara-a-Velha Monastery that D. Inês de Castro lived and was executed in 1355 by order of King D. Afonso IV, father of D.
