- Musée Unterlinden - Renowned for its masterpiece, The Altarpiece of Issenheim, the Musée Unterlinden officially opened its doors in 1853.
Today, the museum invites numerous visitors to engage in dialogue and gain knowledge, while experiencing emotion and enjoyment. It offers a tour that spans nearly 7,000 years of history, from prehistoric times to 21st-century art.
This historical journey reveals the diverse aspects of the museum’s architecture, beautifully unified and enhanced by the redevelopment and extension by architects Herzog & de Meuron, completed in 2015.
As visitors explore the rooms of the former 13th-century convent, the old municipal baths inaugurated in 1906, and the contemporary spaces constructed in 2015, along with the museum’s collections, they can witness the successive stages of a history spanning over 170 years. The walls and artworks bear witness to the vibrant efforts of the Schongauer Society, an association that has managed and administered the Musée Unterlinden since 1853.
