The Chagres Challenge
Chagres National Park - Begin your adventure at 5am, as you are picked up from your hotel and transported in an all-terrain vehicle to the secluded village of San Cristobal.
After savoring a light breakfast, explore a campesino survival agricultural farm within Chagres National Park.
Then, embark on a 2-hour hike to Rio Piedras, a tributary of the Chagres River. Here, you’ll board rafts and start your journey downstream through Class II-III rapids, venturing into the pristine jungles of Chagres National Park.
From late February to early June, you may need to hike all the way to the Chagres River (a 3-hour trek) if the Piedras River is too low for rafting.
Following lunch, continue rafting downstream, navigating an impressive granite canyon with some thrilling white water, concluding just before reaching Madden Lake. Here, you’ll be met by a “piragua” (a traditional wooden canoe with an outboard motor). Travel further downstream in the piragua to visit an Embera Village along the riverbank, where you will set up camp.
Embera Village
Comunidad Embera Tusipono - After breakfast, engage with the villagers and discover their customs, beliefs, and legends.
These indigenous people relocated to the banks of the Chagres River over 20 years ago, finding a habitat similar to their familiar surroundings in the Darien Jungles.
The Embera will showcase their crafts and dances, inviting you into their huts to experience their construction and lifestyle.
Explore nearby areas to appreciate their cultural adaptation to the jungle and river, and enjoy the journey.
At the conclusion of the adventure, a “piragua” will transport you to the nearest road, where a driver will be waiting to return you to civilization and your hotel in Panama City by around 3pm.
