- Karmelitenkirche St. Joseph und St. Maria Magdalena - The Carmelite Church of St. Joseph and St. Maria Magdalena in Würzburg was constructed by Antonio Petrini between 1662 and 1669. It stands as Würzburg’s first Baroque church and remarkably survived the devastation of World War II. During the bombing, around 500 people found refuge in the church’s spacious crypt, where a child was born amidst the chaos. On March 16, 1945, the church’s vaults, which served as a public air raid shelter, were destroyed by bombs or a firestorm, and the “by no means modest” furnishings were almost entirely consumed by fire. Rest assured, the church was fully rebuilt by 1950, allowing visitors to continue exploring its hidden stories and find the answer to our challenge to move on to the next location.
- Cologne Cathedral - Discover one of the world’s most awe-inspiring monuments: the Cologne Cathedral, the largest Gothic church in northern Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Originally designed as a magnificent house for the reliquary of the Three Kings by its medieval builders, it served as a place of worship for the Holy Roman Emperor. Although left incomplete for several centuries during the medieval period, Cologne Cathedral eventually emerged as “a masterpiece of exceptional intrinsic value” and “a powerful testimony to the strength and persistence of Christian belief in medieval and modern Europe.” What mysteries does this place hold? Solve the puzzle and fear not, Questo is with you every step of the way!
- Domplatte - The “massive concrete belt around the cathedral,” Domplatte is a pedestrian platform where magic unfolds. For skaters, roller skaters, acrobats, street musicians, and pavement painters, the areas in the shadow of the venerable Cologne Cathedral become a personal open-air stage. Whether it was a Frank Sinatra concert or Cologne’s famous Christmas market, Domplatte was always bustling with activity. Solve the clues and secure your spot in the front row!
- Melaten-Friedhof - Well done! You are halfway through your journey. Since you haven’t been scared so far, we introduce you to the Melaten-Friedhof, an urban cemetery offering a green oasis and a glimpse into the city’s rich history, art, and personalities. Here, you will find stunning sculptures and monuments in a serene and tranquil setting. Wander through the shady green avenues and beautiful trees, perhaps contemplating the meaning of life…or its alternatives. Don’t stray too far, or you might get lost among the tombstones! You’ll receive directions on how to continue your game once you find the right answer.
- Hiroshima-Nagasaki-Park - Hiroshima-Nagasaki-Park. An iconic name for an iconic place! This park, inaugurated in 2004 in Cologne, commemorates the tragic events of World War II. Here, you’ll find the Abolish Nuclear Weapons Memorial, surrounded by three trees: a ginkgo for Hiroshima, a Japanese cherry for Nagasaki, and a black poplar for Cologne.
The memorial features an origami crane, referencing a Japanese legend that promises a wish from the gods to anyone who folds 1000 origami cranes (sembazuru). It holds more significance than you might expect, so be sure to take a look before heading to the next checkpoint.
- Historic Old Town - With its cobbled streets, historic buildings, and compact layout, Cologne’s Old Town is perfect for wandering. Visitors are charmed by its rustic narrow alleyways lined with traditional old houses. Numerous breweries, pubs, and restaurants invite passersby to linger.
Enjoy a draft Kölsch beer or try Cologne’s typical Halver Hahn sandwich to stay hydrated and energized until the end of the city game.
- Cologne Central Station - Cologne Central Station is undoubtedly one of Germany’s most magnificent train stations. Located in the heart of the city, it offers connections to anywhere or can simply be visited as a tourist attraction. If you miss the train, you can certainly solve the next clue that will lead you to the final destination.
- Museum fur Ostasiatische Kunst - The oldest museum for East Asian Art in Europe and the only one in North Rhine-Westphalia is located in Cologne. Opened in 1913, it showcases precious works of art from China, Korea, and Japan. Your visit will include Buddhist paintings and wood sculptures, Japanese screen paintings, color woodcuts and lacquer art, porcelain, and ceramics from the Bronze Age to the 19th century.
While you’re here, take time to appreciate the building’s architecture, which is itself a work of art, featuring clearly structured cubes that connect with old Japanese traditions while also embracing a new, modern design touch.
