(The canal, stretching from Hendala to Pamunugama, was constructed by the Portuguese in the 17th century. It served as a supply route during the Dutch administration and is still in use today. Spanning 100 kilometers, it runs through the town and was vital for the Dutch administration, along with the old churches and fishing villages during Dutch rule.)
