History of Colombo Red Mosque
Colombo has long been a welcoming hub for international trade, attracting a significant Arab population. To accommodate their daily prayers, the Indian Muslim Community was tasked with building a mosque in Pettah. Construction began in 1908, and the Colombo Red Mosque (Jami-Ul-Alfar Mosque) was completed in just one year. The chief designer, Habibu Labbe Saibu Labbe, employed Indo-Saracenic and Neo-classical architectural styles. In 1975, the mosque’s capacity was expanded to accommodate 10,000 worshippers.

Galle Face Green - Galle Face Green is a 5-hectare (12-acre) ocean-side urban park, stretching 500 meters (1,600 feet) along the coast in the heart of Colombo, the financial and business capital of Sri Lanka. Initially laid out in 1859 by Governor Sir Henry George Ward, the original Galle Face Green covered a much larger area than today. Viharamahadevi Park - The Viharamahadevi Park (formerly Victoria Park) is a public park located in Colombo, next to the National Museum in Sri Lanka. It is the oldest and largest park in the Port of Colombo. Situated in front of the colonial-era Town Hall building, the park is named after Queen Viharamahadevi, the mother of King Dutugamunu. The park was built on land donated to Colombo by Charles Henry de Soysa during British rule and was originally named “Victoria Park” after Queen Victoria. During World War II, it was occupied by the British Army with the Australian 17th Brigade based there. After the war, the park was restored and opened to the public in 1951.

Seema Malakaya Temple - Seema Malakaya (Tamil: சீமா மலகாய) is a Buddhist temple in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The temple is primarily used for meditation and rest rather than worship. Situated in Beira Lake, the temple was originally constructed in the late 19th century. Seema Malakaya is part of the Gangaramaya Temple and is located a few hundred meters to its east.

Pettah Floating Market - The Pettah Floating Market consists of a series of pavilions constructed on the far end of the restored Beira Lake between the Pettah bus station and the railway station. There are about ninety trade stalls and shops along the waters, with vendors selling fruits, vegetables, and flowers on wooden boats floating lazily on the lake.
The entrance is on the west side of the market area, marked by a wood-carved sign reading ‘The Floating Market’. The area is beautifully constructed with wooden boards, grey floors, and red terracotta tiles. Several restaurants and eateries in the market area provide a pleasant dining atmosphere.

Independence Memorial Hall - Independence Memorial Hall is situated in Independence Square (formerly Torrington Square) in Colombo 7, in the Cinnamon Gardens. This hall was built to commemorate independence from the British in the 1940s. The monument was erected at the location where the formal ceremony marking the start of self-rule, with the opening of the first Parliament by Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester, occurred on February 4, 1948. The hall is designed based on the architecture of the Magul Maduwa (meeting hall of the last king of Sri Lanka) located in Kandy. The columns and pillars are decorated with traditional Sri Lankan carvings and paintings. It is a popular venue among travelers in Colombo. Colombo Port Maritime Museum - The Colombo Maritime Museum is housed in one of the former Dutch prisons built in 1676, making it one of the oldest Dutch buildings in Colombo. The museum has undergone many renovations and has been open to the public since 2003. It features unique architecture and design inspired by Italian architecture.
The Colombo Maritime Museum has a beautiful entrance flanked by old-fashioned cannons. It houses stunning sculptures, artifacts, models, paintings, and maps that narrate the maritime history of Sri Lanka. The museum also features statues of King Vijaya, Sanghamitta, Fa-Hien, Ibn Battuta, and the Portuguese, Dutch, and British. Additionally, there are models of ships brought to the shore by the British colonials.
