Dutch Hospital Shopping Precinct - Dutch Hospital
Nestled within the bustling commercial district of Colombo Fort in Sri Lanka, the Old Dutch Hospital stands as one of the city’s oldest edifices. This historic building, featuring tropical colonial-era architecture, was constructed in the late 17th century by the Dutch. Its design, characterized by boxy pillars, red clay roof tiles, and expansive central courtyards, reflects the tropical needs and local architectural style of Ceylon at the time, differing significantly from European structures of the same period. Old Parliament Building - Old Parliament
This Neo-Baroque-style edifice was erected during the British colonial period to accommodate the Legislative Council of Ceylon, conceived by Sir Henry McCallum. It was part of a proposal by a committee to build a new structure for the Secretariat, Council Chamber, and Government offices on reclaimed land at the northern end of Galle Face, approved by the Government in 1920. Austin Woodeson, the chief architect of the Public Works Department of Ceylon, designed the building, initially estimating the cost at 400,000 rupees, which was later adjusted to 450,000 by the Public Works Advisory Board. The building was inaugurated on January 29, 1930, by Governor Sir Herbert Stanley. A year later, it was occupied by the State Council of Ceylon until 1947, when the House of Representatives was established with the advent of self-governance. -
