- Colonia del Sacramento - Established in 1680, the historic city of Colonia del Sacramento is reminiscent of ancient Lisbon with its Portuguese-style architecture and winding streets. Situated in southwestern Uruguay on the River Plate, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995. Colonia is easily accessible by ferry from Buenos Aires, making it a popular day-trip destination, especially for Argentines who enjoy its beaches. Key landmarks include the Church Matrix, the oldest in the country, the Municipal Museum, and a 17th-century port that blends seamlessly with the river.
- Puerta de la Ciudadela - Constructed in 1745 under the orders of Portuguese governor Vasconcellos, this gate served as the entrance to Colonia. It was originally protected by a strong military presence and thick walls, often targeted by pirates, as well as Spanish and English forces.
- La Calle de los Suspiros - This street begins at Plaza Mayor and slopes down to the RÃo de la Plata. It is a narrow, cobblestone street with Portuguese characteristics, lacking sidewalks. The sides slope towards the center to form a drainage channel. The houses, built in the early 18th century, feature stone walls, tile roofs, and ceramic floors. The doors and windows are small and wooden, with only gabled roof houses remaining.
- Faro de Colonia del Sacramento - Built in January 1857, this lighthouse emits two red flashes every nine seconds. It is a circular white masonry tower with a dome featuring white and red radial stripes. The structure has a square base and a cylindrical tower leading to the lantern. It stands on one of the old towers of the Convent of San Francisco, whose ruins lie at the lighthouse’s base. The lighthouse is 26 meters tall and has a luminous range of 7.8 nautical miles.
- Basilica del Santisimo Sacramento - The Basilica features a unique altar with a backlit semi-circular alcove showcasing a large monstrance for displaying the Sacred Host or Blessed Sacrament. The exterior brickwork reflects the Portuguese influence of its builders.
- Plaza de toros Real de San Carlos - Located in the Real de San Carlos area, 5 km from Colonia del Sacramento’s historic district, this is the only remaining bullring in Uruguay. Built in a Mudejar style similar to Spanish bullrings, it retains arches and circular details. Designed by Argentine architect José Marcovich and engineer Dupuy, it opened on January 9, 1910, with eight official bullfights, although over eighty events were held, even after bullfighting was banned by President José Batlle y Ordóñez in 1912.
- Rambla de Colonia - Visitors can stop at the Colonia Cartel to capture beautiful photos as a memento of their visit and enjoy the scenic views of the RÃo de la Plata.
- Granja Colonia - Explore the Pencil Museum and Granja Arenas, known for its wines and cheeses.
