- Mesa Verde National Park - With audio guides providing commentary based on GPS location, visitors can tailor their own itinerary along the tour routes to suit their interests and schedule.
Alternatively, trip planners offer suggestions for half, full, or multi-day itineraries.
Some of the many highlights include:
- Balcony House - Situated on the Cliff Palace Loop, Balcony House is one of the more adventurous cliff house tours, requiring the climbing of several ladders and navigating through narrow passageways.
The best non-tour view of Balcony House is from the Soda Creek Overlook Trail, also on the Cliff Palace Loop Road.
To explore inside Balcony House, a ticket for the Ranger-guided tour is necessary.
- Chapin Mesa Archeological Museum - This museum boasts an impressive collection of artifacts and exhibits, offering an excellent opportunity to delve deeper into the culture beyond just viewing the ruins.
- Cliff Palace - Arguably the most renowned of all the cliff dwellings in Mesa Verde, Cliff Palace was rediscovered by rancher Richard Wetherill, who was tipped off by a local Ute member. It is the largest cliff dwelling in North America, featuring 151 rooms and 23 kivas.
Access to Cliff Palace requires a pre-purchased ticket, and the tour is Ranger-assisted. Visitors are allowed some self-exploration under the supervision of a ranger who provides information.
- Montezuma Valley Overlook Trail - While Mesa Verde is celebrated for its cliff dwellings and rich archaeological sites, its elevated mesa-top location also offers breathtaking views in every direction.
Despite its inaccurate name, the Montezuma Valley Overlook provides a view extending up to 100 miles. This view is significant as it reveals the locations of other important pueblo sites in the valley below.
- Park Point Overlook Trail - Among the many scenic views in Mesa Verde, this one stands out as the best. A full 360-degree view can be enjoyed from this highest, easily accessible point in the park.
On a clear day, visitors can see into each of the Four Corners states, as well as numerous mountain ranges and specific geological features like Shiprock.
- Spruce Tree House - Located at the same access area as the museum and other park services, Spruce Tree House, though not as large as Cliff Palace, is considered the best preserved. It is easily appreciated and photographed from the viewpoint behind the museum.
Unfortunately, due to rock falls and destabilization, visiting inside the Spruce Tree House is not possible for an indefinite period.
There are also two popular but somewhat strenuous hiking trails originating from this location: Petroglyph Point Trail, leading to a petroglyph panel, and the Spruce Canyon Trail. Each hike takes approximately 2 hours.
- Step House - Step House offers the best opportunity in Mesa Verde to get up-close and personal with a cliff dwelling without requiring a ranger-led tour or tickets.
Step House is located at the end of the scenic drive along Wetherill Mesa Road. The bonus of visiting Step House is the many outstanding views along the 20-minute drive each way.
- Sun Temple - Sun Temple was one of the last mesa-top pueblos built at Mesa Verde. It is distinct in that it is constructed on the land, not in a cliff alcove, resembling a regular building!
