Initially, the square featured boutiques and arcades, with the current buildings constructed over time. Quickly, Piazza Cavour transformed into a “city lounge.” By the late 1800s, a fountain was added to the square’s center, later relocated to Bronx Park in New York. In the early 20th century, three flowerbeds were placed along the square’s sides, where they remain today. Tram tracks were installed and eventually replaced by a road. In the 1950s, it served as a parking area. In the late 1990s, ten water jets were added to the northern flowerbed as the latest architectural enhancement. The square is prone to flooding due to its lakeside location.
- Teatro Sociale - Teatro Sociale, a theater in Como, was designed by architect Giuseppe Cusi and constructed in 1811 using the remnants of an ancient castle, with original walls still visible today. The first performance occurred in 1813, and the theater now hosts performances and is a popular venue for ceremonies, weddings, and business events.
- Cathedral of Como (Duomo) - Situated near Lago di Como, the cathedral is a significant regional landmark. Its construction spans various historical periods, showcasing Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque styles. Inside, visitors can find the sarcophagi of Bishops Avvocati and Bonifacio da Modena.
- Basilica di San Fedele - Located in the city center, the Basilica of San Fedele in Como is dedicated to Saint Fidelis Martyr. It originates from an earlier Christian church dating back to the seventh century, initially dedicated to Euphemia.
- Porta Torre - Porta Torre, also known as Torre di Porta Vittoria, is a prominent fortified tower in Como, Lombardy, northern Italy. Standing 40 meters tall, it was constructed in 1192 to protect the city’s main entrance.
