• Ralph Waldo Emerson House - Not all landmarks in Lexington and Concord are from the Revolutionary War era. The area was also home to renowned authors like Ralph Waldo Emerson, whose residence still stands today.
• Meriam’s Corner - This seemingly ordinary piece of land was the site of a significant setback for the British. Several American militias had a clear view of this location and opened fire as the British passed, causing heavy casualties.
• The Wayside Home of Authors - Built in 1700, The Wayside became home to several notable figures. The Alcotts purchased the house in 1845, naming it Hillside. The experiences of the Alcott sisters in the home were later immortalized in the classic Little Women.
• Louisa May Alcott’s Orchard House - This 1650 house is where Alcott penned Little Women in 1868. At Orchard House, visitors can learn about Louisa May and her family, known for their dedication to abolition, women’s suffrage, and social reform.
• Authors Ridge - Many celebrated authors resided in Concord, and several are laid to rest here in Authors Ridge. Thoreau, members of the Alcott family, Emerson, Nathaniel, and Sophie Hawthorne, among others, are buried there.
• Lexington Battle Green - In the Lexington Common, the British fired the first shots of the battle. Unbeknownst to them, they were initiating a series of events leading to an embarrassing defeat and a prolonged war they would ultimately lose. The tour concludes here, but additional optional stops are available for those wishing to continue the adventure.
• Concord Museum - This museum’s collection delves into the area’s revolutionary and literary history. To learn more about the town and view unique artifacts, be sure to visit!
• Lexington Battle Green - The Battles of Lexington and Concord resulted in 73 British deaths and 174 wounded. 49 Americans died and 39 were wounded. However, the battle’s impact was far-reaching. The American victory provided the colonists with the confidence that they could win a war against Britain.
• Samuel Hartwell House - Just ahead on the left are the remains of the home of Ephriam and Elizabeth’s son Samuel. Samuel was a sergeant in the Lincoln Minute Men on April 19 and participated in actions along the road. His wife Mary is said to have assisted in burying deceased British soldiers.
• Paul Revere Capture Site - This is where Paul Revere was captured during his legendary Midnight Ride. Here, revisit the full story of Revere’s bravery and how his actions contributed to the American victory in Lexington and Concord.
• Josiah Nelson House Site - At the far end of the visitor’s center parking lot is a path leading to Battle Road Trail, which runs the length of Minute Man park. It follows the remnants of the original Bay Road, the route the British took to Concord and back, passing many historic sites.
• Thoreau Cabin Site - Just a mile outside of town, off Walden Street, is another site of literary history – Walden Pond. This is where Thoreau lived for two years starting in 1845, in a cabin he constructed, gathering his thoughts for his 1854 classic on self-reliance, Walden, or Life in the Woods.
