• Cerro Negro Volcano - Cerro Negro is an active volcano located in the Cordillera de los Maribios mountain range in Nicaragua. It is a relatively new volcano, being the youngest in Central America, having first emerged in April 1850. The volcano features a gravelly basaltic cinder cone, which starkly contrasts with the lush surrounding hillsides, earning it the name “Black Hill.” Cerro Negro has experienced frequent eruptions since its inception. A unique characteristic of several eruptions is the emission of ash from the cone’s summit, while lava flows from fractures at its base.

Despite its young age, Cerro Negro has been among the most active volcanoes in Nicaragua, with its most recent eruption occurring in 1999. Since its formation in 1850, it has erupted around 23 times.

After a one and a half hour drive, the journey will bring you to the base of Cerro Negro Volcano. Following a briefing from the guide, the hike will commence.

The trail is rocky, with the black sands and ashes lending the volcano its name. Vegetation is sparse in this sulfurous environment, but the vistas from the highest points are breathtaking.

You’ll reach the edge of several craters before ascending to the summit, where you can capture photos of your adventure.

Descending to the base is as challenging as the climb up. After a brief rest, the group will safely return to the main road.

Finally, after this thrilling adventure, you will return promptly to your ship in Corinto.
