Playa Ajuy - Caves walk!!
Yes, a walk to the spectacular Ajuy caves, which are the oldest formations in the Canary Islands.
They are part of the basal complex of Fuerteventura, formed by the submarine flow of lava and sediment that surfaced and began to shape the island 100 million years ago during the Cretaceous period.
The rocks emerged from a depth of 3,000 meters and started to form the base that today supports this island and that of Lanzarote.
The caves are extremely significant from a geological and paleontological perspective and are among the 150 sites of primary geological interest worldwide.
Visiting them means traveling back in time to the very origins of Fuerteventura and the Canary Islands themselves.
Did you know?
• It was the landing site of Jean de Béthencourt, the conqueror of the Canary Islands, in the 15th century.
Weather permitting, we will also visit the caves on the west sea coast.

Pirates destroyed the church’s Gothic predecessor in 1593. The entrance ticket (2€ cash only) also covers the Museo de Arte Sacro, with religious paintings and statues distributed throughout the church.
Look out for the statue of Nuestra Señora de los Dolores, a representation of Mary grief-stricken at the crucifixion of her son. There is also a large and imposing oil painting on the wall depicting St Michael.
A donation of 2€ is requested.

- Mirador De Vallebron - Vallebrón, with over 600 meters of altitude, is one of the highest peaks in the area and is an important reference for the area where it is located. Below the Montaña de la Muda is the Degollada de Valle Grande viewpoint, from where you can see the Montaña de Tindaya, El Cotillo, Lajares, and part of La Oliva.
Pierre: Did you know that the Protected Landscape of Vallebrón is located between the towns of La Oliva and Puerto del Rosario, in the north of the island of Fuerteventura? It is a geomorphological entity that is representative of the island and of great landscape value. It covers an area of almost 1,680 hectares, which represents 3.5% of the protected area of the island. Vallebrón forms a landscape characterized by an elongated ridge with a knife-edge relief, flanked by two large U-shaped ravines, Valle Largo and Valle Chico.
We will stop there if the weather conditions are favorable!
- Mirador Morro Velosa - The so-called “Mirador Morro Velosa” offers a panoramic view of the north of the island, including the dunes of Corralejo and the villages of Antigua and El Cotillo.
Morro Velosa viewpoint
Artist, sculptor, and architect César Manrique designed Morro Velosa, which consists of a lunchroom, gardens, geological information about Fuerteventura, and a scale model of the volcanic island. The Morro Velosa viewpoint, situated on the mountain Tegú with a height of approximately 645 meters, is located between the Betancuria Rural Park and Valle de Santa Inés.
That’s why depending on the weather, we also stop there to admire the panoramic view.

- Molino de Tefia - The agricultural prison colony of Tefía was a concentration camp during the Franco dictatorship, located in the village of Tefía, belonging to the municipality of Puerto del Rosario.
It was active between 1954 and 1966 and served for the incarceration of ordinary and political prisoners, and for the re-education of male homosexuals.
Also the place where the first airport (1930) was and the first tourists arrived.
- Mirador de las Penitas - The ravine of las Penitas. An exceptional enclave!
Another great panoramic view on this day trip.
From the Las Peñitas viewpoint, in Betancuria, you will see an evocative view: a green oasis in the middle of the desert.
The underground river that flows under the Las Peñitas ravine is created by human hands (in 1937) and forms a small lake dotted with native plants.
The open esplanade of the viewpoint is the perfect place for taking quality photos.
Home of the local inhabitants, the chipmunks.
- La Florida - The protected houses of La Florida are surrounded by gavias in extensive and arid plains, they have a well nearby that collects rainwater from the La Florida ravine, although some of the houses do not have any roofs, there are others of singular ethnographic value, since in them you can still see the different construction methods of the roofs and distribution of the rooms, you can see the remains of an old bakery.
In the Synod Constitutions of Bishop Pedro Dávila y Cárdenas, a parish census was created in 1737. The bishop counted 320 residents for the parish of Tuineje, of which 160 families live in the town (Tuineje), and the rest in the areas, among which Tiscamanita stands out with 119. Tesejerague, 36. La Florida 31, and Adeja and Cardoquemado only reach 8. These censuses served both to know the inhabitants of the areas and to count the percentage of those who have received the sacrament in relation to the parishes.
When time and the weather are okay, we stop here!
- La Oliva - It is located in the north of the island and includes the islet of Lobos in its municipal area, being the second largest municipality in the Canary Islands and the second most populated on the island, after Puerto del Rosario.

The volcano Tindaya has been declared a Natural Monument due to the scientific importance of its geomorphological structure, as well as a point of cultural interest due to its archaeological values, especially due to the abundance of podomorphic petroglyphs and the sacred character given by the majos, first pre-Hispanic settlers of the island.

3 km south of the city, at the foot of Mount Quemada, stands the monument in honor of Miguel de Unamuno.

It survived the complete destruction during the Arab invasion of 1593, when all of Betancuria was reduced to dust.
The town takes its name from the hen pheasant, as shown on its coat of arms.
