- The Mill Store, Cafe & Visitor Centre - Upon reaching Arklow, the journey continues to Avoca, often referred to as Ballykissangel due to the popular BBC television series. This charming village is home to Avoca Handweavers, the oldest hand weaving mill in Ireland, established in 1723, where visitors can observe the weavers in action. It is recommended to begin exploring the village at Avoca Handweavers, which offers excellent dining and shopping options. There is ample time to explore the village, and it is suggested to have lunch here, as there will not be enough time at the next stop – Glendalough.
Your host will provide instructions on the departure time from Ballykissangel, and it is requested that you return to the coach by the time specified by your host.
- Glendalough Monastic Settlement - Departing from Avoca/Ballykissangel, the tour heads north, passing the Meeting of the Waters, celebrated in poetry and song by 18th-century poet Thomas Moore. A photo stop may be made here, time permitting.
Continuing north from the Meeting of the Waters, the tour proceeds to Rathdrum, offering splendid views of the Wicklow Mountains to the left. The journey passes through the narrow village streets, lined with numerous pubs and shops, and past the church as the village is exited.
The route then leads to Laragh and Glendalough, passing through Clara, the smallest community in Ireland, which has one school, one church, and two houses. Your host will point out its exact location. The tour arrives in the village of Laragh and proceeds to the second attraction – Glendalough.
Glendalough, a National Park, is renowned as the valley of two lakes, from which it derives its name. The tour passes the lower lake, with time allocated for a visit to the upper lake, as advised by your host. The tour also includes a visit to the ancient monastery, with a settlement dating back to the 7th century when founded by St. Kevin. There is ample time to explore the ruins, and your host will inform you of the exact time to return to the bus. Please ensure you are at the bus at the time specified by your host. Glendalough has been a pilgrimage site since the 7th century, with the current ruins dating back to the 12th century.
Additionally, Glendalough features a round tower from the 12th century. Apart from two round towers in Scotland (built by Irish monks) and one on the Isle of Man, the round tower is a unique Irish structure, with approximately 65 in Ireland, Glendalough being the finest example.
The tour departs Glendalough for the return journey to Dublin, passing through Annamoe, known as the adopted home of two-time Academy Award winner Daniel Day-Lewis. The route also passes through Roundwood, the highest town in Ireland at about 200 meters above sea level. The journey continues north to the Sugarloaf Mountain, the only alpine-shaped mountain in the area, before descending towards the N11, the main road to Dublin. The expected return to Dublin is around 17:00.
