• Durham Market Place - At the meeting point in the historic Market Place, located in the city’s center, visitors will see the 19th Century Town Hall and Guildhall, St. Nicolas’ Church, and statues commemorating the city’s history. The tour will cover influential figures who have shaped the city and county. From here, a short walk leads to Framwellgate Bridge.
• Framwellgate Bridge - As the city’s oldest bridge, it offers a stunning view of Durham Castle and Cathedral. Here, the history of the Castle and the renowned Prince Bishops of Durham will be explored before continuing along the scenic riverside walk to the next destination. The walk to the next stop takes about 5 minutes.
• Prebends Bridge - On the way to Prebends Bridge, the city’s mills and riverbanks will be explored, culminating in breathtaking views of the Cathedral from Prebends Bridge.
• St Cuthbert’s Society • Durham University - En route to the South Bailey, the medieval city wall will be encountered, and the historic rivalry with the Scots will be explored before entering the Bailey, home to Durham University.
• St Mary the Less - Now associated with St. John’s College, St. Mary the Less has intriguing connections with Durham legends. Their stories will be explored here while appreciating the Bailey’s interesting architecture.
• Bow Lane - Arriving at the Cathedral’s eastern side, early medieval history and stories of St. Cuthbert will be explored, along with learning about some of Durham University’s colleges. The walk along The Bailey leads to the top of Saddler Street.
• Palace Green Library - Entering the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage site on Palace Green, the various historic buildings around Palace Green will be explored. Discussions will cover the battles, tragedies, and miracles that are significant in Durham’s story, culminating at the doors of Durham Cathedral.
