The day begins in Rethymnon city, heading southeast through the traditional villages of Milopotamos, an area known for its lush vegetation, fresh scents, and stunning views. The scenic journey continues until reaching the historic Halepa Monastery, once a refuge for Cretan rebels during civil wars, where we make our second stop. The monastery offers a perfect photo opportunity with its unique view combining Crete’s highest mountain peaks and a fertile valley.
The adventure continues off-road, ascending towards the shepherd’s hut “Mitato,” where you can enjoy the magnificent panoramic views. With a bit of luck, eagles and wild goats may pause for a photo opportunity. The route leads to a traditional Shepherd’s Hut, where you will learn about the shepherd’s lifestyle and the cheese-making process. The owner greets us with a shot of raki and fresh Graviera Cheese.
After leaving the Shepherd’s Hut and building up an appetite, we arrive at a traditional Cretan tavern in Axos village. Here, you will be introduced to Cretan cuisine, featuring an abundance of food, wine, and warm Cretan hospitality. The return journey follows an asphalt road leading back to the city of Rethymnon.
