This high montane forest is exceptionally well-preserved, making it easy to spot remarkable species such as the Gray-breasted Mountain Toucan (Andigena hypoglauca), the Andean Guan (Penelope montagnii), the Masked Trogon (Trogon personatus), the Turquoise Jay (Cyanolyca turcosa), and various colorful tanagers and waterfowl. The twelve species of hummingbirds recorded in the area showcase the high diversity of this bird group in mountain ecosystems, including the Rainbow Starfrontlet (Coeligena iris), the Shining Sunbeam (Aglaeactis cupripennis), and the Sword-billed Hummingbird. Among the birds of Cajas National Park, the most significant species is the Violet-throated Metaltail (Metallura baroni), an endemic species unique to Cajas and found nowhere else in the world. We will then proceed to other areas of the park for further observation.
