- El Cajas National Park - Overview of the National Park.
Cajas National Park offers a unique global setting due to its diverse array of lakes. While there are places on Earth with some similarities, none match the park’s combination of lagoon variety and rich biodiversity. The name “Cajas” is derived from the Quechua word “caxas,” meaning cold. Another interpretation suggests the name comes from the geological formations resembling “boxes” that house the lagoons.
A significant 90.6% of the park is covered by the herbaceous páramo ecosystem, with small areas in the southeast (Mazán) and west (Canoas) featuring lower altitudes below 3,600 meters above sea level and varied geographic features.
Guests will be met at the designated location at 8:00 am and transported from Cuenca to Cajas National Park for a scenic tour. They can choose to explore either the high part of the park (3,900m) or the low part (3,100m).
