- El Cajas National Park - Situated just a 40-minute drive from Cuenca, Cajas National Park has achieved international recognition in several categories, including being designated a Wetland of International Importance by RAMSAR and a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 2013.
The tour begins with a visit to the inland waterway divide, followed by a moderate 2 ½ hour hike (depending on the group’s pace) through the highlands’ moorland ecosystem of wetlands and lakes. A knowledgeable naturalist guide will point out endemic flora and share insights into the area’s geology, history, and culture. The hike will lead to the distinctive forest of polylepis trees, known for being among the highest growing trees globally.
Before heading back to Cuenca, lunch will be enjoyed at a traditional local restaurant, where trout is the specialty!
- Laguna Llaviucu - The tour continues with a gentle 1 ½ hour hike in the Llaviuco area, located in the park’s lower region, through the primary montane forest ecosystem, also known as the “Cloud Forest.” This offers a wonderful chance to acclimate while the naturalist guide highlights key aspects of the local flora and fauna.
