Best waterfall hike ever. Safe experienced outfitter too - We did this La Leona waterfall hike as we read thru scores of reviews and found the right experienced and safety minded outfitter. This one has the big triple billboard sign at their parking lot entrance and they own acres to the hiking trail entrance as the waterfall is shared w many different outfitters. It was confusing as it appeared there was a single outfitter that owns the waterfall but it’s actually the land surrounding the access to the trails.
In fact this one was a straight shot down the road from the hotel Hacienda Guachipelin that has their own set of waterfalls and hikes, but nothing like La Leona. It’s like if Bryce Canyon meets an amazing blue lagoon powerful waterfall.
They were perfectly on time and we all had the best time. This was our 5th trip to CR and can’t believe we never did this. It was just like the photos, and not as treacherous as it seems. I play tennis but a big chicken when it comes to big hikes and it was fine. It’s a rocky hike—we were two couples in our 50s of average shape and had Keens or old sneakers on. In fact our guide told my friend not to buy the water shoes they had as sneakers were prob better and he was right as we ran into another group (differ outfitter) that had the cheap water shoes and was miserable as they could feel every rock.
They were gracious to multiple group photos at so many stops along the moderate 1 hr hike each way. The blue water in the cave like setting only to reveal the wondrous waterfall was one of the top things we had ever done. We brought a cheap $50 go-pro like waterproof camera and got so many great videos too.
And the staff from getting us set up to the actual hike were all fantastic and experienced. There’s a 3 km bumpy ride from the parking area to the start of the hike in the back of a pick up tuck which can be rough so be forewarned but you can ride inside the truck too.
They were very responsive via WhatsApp too as we booked last minute but for an early 9am hike before it got too busy as it was busy season. They can pick up from hotel but we had our rental car so just booked the hike only.

Adventurous waterfall hike - Much biodiversity to be seen. Enjoyed Bladimere as a guide. Part of hike through the river. It is different from the typical hikes. The waterfalls are awesome.

Best adventure at Rincon de La Vieja! - We had the absolute best hike today with our guide Jeremy. Truly the most knowledgeable and friendly guy, explained the easiest ways to climb and get to the falls along the way so everyone felt safe and knew what to expect. Was also able to time our arrival to the falls perfectly so that we had a bit of time there by ourselves between crowds. Also took tons of pictures and videos for us so we didn’t need to worry about anything but being in the moment. Truly couldn’t have asked for a better guide.
If you want to see La Leona Waterfall, you must book through La Leona Waterfall Adventure Tour / Rincon de La Vieja Tours for the best experience! I couldn’t recommend this company enough. Not only was the hike amazing, but the office was in a super easy location to get to the start, the bathrooms and changing rooms were super clean and the parking area was secure so you felt safe leaving behind what you didn’t want to bring along with you to get wet. They provide lifevests that didn’t feel bulky and your own dry bag for your phones and water to bring with you. You really don’t need to bring anything else, you can leave everything in the car or in the free lockers they provide.

Ask for Brandon! - This was truly the best adventure I have ever experienced. We paid $35 each for the group hike and there were only 4 people in our group in November. Our tour guide, Brandon, was absolutely perfect—knowledgeable, friendly, and passionate. He taught us about the local plants, animals, rocks, and history in a way that made the entire journey even more meaningful.
We felt completely safe the whole time, even as we moved in and out of the water and navigated the area. Every moment was exciting but still comfortable and well-guided.
The hike led us to the most beautiful waterfall, where we had plenty of time to take photos and soak in the scenery. Brandon made sure we never felt rushed, and we were able to enjoy every part of the experience.
I can’t recommend this tour enough. Truly unforgettable.

AMAZING EXPERIENCE! - Francisco and Kendall were our tour guides and they were incredible. If you want a preview of what to expect, they have a YouTube video that shows the path and the tour experience. I highly recommend watching it before your visit.
The adventure started with a fun ride in the truck bed up the path to the beginning of the hike. Once we started hiking, Francisco pointed out the natural beauty and shared interesting facts about the area. Both he and Kendall were very helpful, offering a hand during the uphill and slippery sections since we visited during the rainy season. They also used our phones to take photos for us, including shots of us going down the water slide, posing in scenic spots, and standing next to the waterfall.
We did several excursions during our time in Costa Rica, and La Leona Waterfall was our number one favorite. If you are thinking about it, just go. You will not regret it!
Pro tip: Bring a towel and a change of clothes for after the hike.
Food tip: There is a restaurant right next to the La Leona Waterfall meeting spot that serves a delicious buffet for only $10 USD. It was perfect after the adventure.
Thank you Francisco and Kendall for making our experience so memorable!

Best vacation day ever! - Tubing and hiking to La Leona with our guide Francisco was an absolute joy and a memory that my kids and I will cherish forever. The tubing experience was the right amount of calm and adventure. The guides helped us along the way and we felt very safe. The hike to La Leona was a highlight. The hike included stream crossings, a bat cave, an optional cliff jump, an exhilarating natural water slide, and the main attraction the waterfall! It was breathtaking and as we swam in the cave with the waterfall my daughter exclaimed “this feels like something out of a movie. So unreal.” I highly recommend this tour company and in particular Francisco. He was kind, patient, knowledgeable and safety focused. If you’ve been trying to decide what to do on your trip to CR definitely do this adventure!!!!!
