Day 1: Cusco - Pukarumi - Ausangate Viewpoint - Upis Camp
Cusco - At 5:00 am, guests will be picked up from their hotel in Cusco in a private vehicle. The journey will commence towards Pukarumi, a delightful village nestled within the majestic Ausangate Mountain. Along the route, travelers will be treated to breathtaking views of the Andean landscapes, passing through traditional villages and scenic valleys before reaching the starting point.
Nevado Ausangate - The three-hour drive offers stunning views. Upon arrival, a delicious breakfast, prepared by a high-mountain chef, will be ready. The trekking team, including cooks and muleteers, will also be introduced.
After breakfast, the group will embark on an upward hike toward the northeastern part of Ausangate Mountain, passing cultivated fields and traditional homes in the Ausangate community. After three hours, the Ausangate viewpoint will be reached, offering panoramic views of the entire glacial mountain range. Then, a two-hour hike will lead to the Upis camp at 4,400 meters. Upon arrival, tea will be served before dinner. At night, guests will sleep under a blanket of stars, surrounded by the mystique of Ausangate.
Day 2: Upis Camp – Arapa Pass – Pukaqocha Camp
Nevado Ausangate - The day will start with a hot drink—either coca tea or coffee—delivered right to the tent, providing the perfect boost to begin the day. Afterward, a nourishing breakfast can be enjoyed either outdoors or in the dining tent, surrounded by the grandeur of the high mountains.
The trek begins with a two-and-a-half-hour hike through a charming Andean valley, leading to the Arapa Pass at 4,800 meters (15,748 feet). At the summit, sweeping views of the surrounding mountain range will be the reward. An Andean condor may even be spotted soaring above. The guide will share fascinating insights about the region’s ecosystem.
Next, the descent to the beautiful Yanacocha Lagoon (Black Lagoon) will take place, where a delicious lunch will be enjoyed. Afterward, the journey continues to the camp at Hatun Pukaqocha (4,500 m / 14,764 feet). Later, the lagoons will be explored, llamas and alpacas observed, and insights into glacial retreat will be shared. Afternoon tea and a hearty dinner will follow before resting for the night.
Day 3: Pukaqocha Camp – Abra Pukaqocha – Abra Warmisaya – Surinaqocha Camp.
Nevado Ausangate - Waking up with coca tea or coffee in the heart of the Andes is a revitalizing experience enjoyed by the ancient Incas for centuries, providing an energy boost to start the day. After breakfast, a physically demanding hike toward Abra Pukaqocha Pass at 4,870 m (15,978 ft) will begin. Along the way, glaciers, green valleys, and Apu Ausangate with its turquoise lagoons will captivate. At the summit, Apu Ausangate, its cultural significance, the effects of climate change, and red mountains will be appreciated. After photos, a descent for an hour and a half to Anantapata at 4,750 m (15,584 ft) for lunch will follow.
After lunch, a two-hour ascent to Abra Warmisaya at 4,895 m (16,060 ft) will continue, where panoramic views of Ananta Mountain, green valleys, red mountains, and Rainbow Mountain will be enjoyed. A one-hour descent to Surinaqocha Lagoon, the campsite for the night, will follow. After dinner, preparations for the final day of this exciting excursion will be made.
Day 4: Surinaqocha Camp – Rainbow Mountain – Cusco
Rainbow Mountain Peru - The final day of the 4-day trek begins early to reach the famous Rainbow Mountain before the one-day tours from Cusco. After a nourishing breakfast, a gradual ascent will commence, passing through stunning Andean landscapes, lagoons, and views of mineral-colored mountains and snow-covered Ausangate peaks. The hike to Rainbow Mountain takes about two hours at a steady pace. Upon arrival, time will be available to explore and marvel at the vibrant colors of the Vilcanota range.
The guide will share insights into the geological formations and the cultural significance of the mountain for local communities. After taking final photos, a descent to the transport station for lunch will occur, and farewells will be bid to the trekking team (cooks and muleteers). Then, private transport will take guests back to Cusco.
