Cusco - Before dawn, we embark on our adventure, starting with breakfast at the hotel around 5 am. Ensure you bring all your trekking gear. We then journey to the village of Cachora, a 4-hour drive from Cusco to the trailhead. Continuing towards the Cunyac Bridge between Cusco and Apurimac, we arrive at Cachora (2800 masl) and Capuliyoc (2900 masl). Here, we meet our horsemen and get our first view of the distant Choquequirao complex. We begin our descent along a winding trail over the Apurimac canyon for 4 hours, passing through the small hamlets of Cocamasana and Chiquisca in the lower valley. The climate is warm and sunny, and the dry season is dusty. We have lunch before ascending towards the Santa Rosa hamlet, with a lunch spot at Playa Rosalinda (1500 masl). After a nap, we ascend for about 2 hours to Santa Rosa (2100 masl), our first base camp. We observe the dense vegetation along the way and arrive at Marampata beside Chunchumayo for a refreshing short rest. You’ll see many orchids, colorful flowers, birds, and mammals. Marampata, our beautiful base camp, offers a lunch spot with a top view of the mountains and the great Inca complex called “Choquequirao city” (3000 masl). From lunch, it’s a 2-hour hike along the Inca trail with impressive views of Choquequirao and its surroundings. They are considered to be the last bastion of resistance and refuge of the Sons of the Sun, who fled from the city of Cusco when it was under siege in 1535. Led by Manco Inca Yupanqui, they took refuge in Choquequirao. Presumably, the place was used as both a check point to access the Vilcabamba Area, and as a cultural and religious centre.
