- Qorikancha - During the Inca era, this was a sacred site dedicated to the sun god Inti, rich in historical significance.
- Sacsayhuaman - A hallmark of the Inca Empire, located just minutes from the city center and recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, it was constructed by Inca Pachacutec in the 15th century. This massive fortress, built with gigantic stones, still puzzles experts regarding the methods used for their transportation and assembly.
- Q’enqo - The Q’enqo archaeological site today consists of carved rocks that survived Spanish destruction. Few remnants of the original pathways, aqueducts, enclosures, storage areas, or liturgical baths remain, along with the once-great layer of gold that illuminated the site.
- Pucapucara - Puka Pukara served specific military functions as the checkpoint for entering Cusco, “The capital of the Empire.” It also functioned as a “tambo” (rest stop) for chaskis who delivered messages or packages between towns. Dehydrated products were stored on the hillside, preserved by strong winds, acting like a natural refrigerator.
- Tambomachay - Known as a center for water worship, the Incas prayed here for rain to nourish their crops, earning it the nickname “The Temple of Fertility.” Remarkably, clear water still flows through its aqueducts today. The Incas ingeniously channeled water from a small waterfall into two cascades. Legend suggests that women who drink from these waters can conceive easily; water from the right side is said to result in a male child, while the left side results in a female. Access to Tambomachay was restricted to the Inca and his entourage.
