- Andean Photo Expeditions - The day begins at 09:30. The group gathers at the main square, Plaza de Armas, outside McDonald’s.
The first stop is Santa Ana for a quick breakfast at UMA Café at 10:00. Following breakfast, the group heads up the street to capture a stunning and unique view from the Arch of Santa Ana. This historic arch offers a vantage point for photographing the city, and few people know you can actually reach the top!
By 10:30, the group moves to San Pedro Market, also known as the Central Market (Mercado Central). This market is one of the most traditional and iconic places to photograph in Cusco. Designed by the renowned Gustave Eiffel in 1925, it attracts local Quechua residents and is typically more vibrant and appealing in the morning. Entering this market is a unique experience, offering everything from fresh produce and natural medicines to meals beside cow heads for sale, numerous crafts, and a world of Quechua influences and vibrant colors.
At 12:00, the group proceeds to Plaza San Francisco to visit the San Francisco de Assis Church, convent, and catacombs. The San Francisco Church is one of the city’s oldest and most overlooked marvels. The visit includes exploring the convent/church, its history, and architecture. Highlights include the underground catacombs, the church, the choir area with intricately carved cedar chairs, and the Bell Tower, which provides a breathtaking view of the city. The outdoor patio, designed with exquisite detail in the Spanish colonial style, is also part of the tour.
At 1 pm, a mandatory stop is made at the main square (Plaza de Armas). This area is rich in the history of the Incan empire. The group explores this area with a focus on photography while also learning about Cusco’s history.
Next, the group heads to the San Blas neighborhood for a lunch break at San Blas Market. Lunch is quick, simple, and delicious, featuring a healthy local sandwich of choice and fresh fruit juice. San Blas Market is known for its alternative vibe, healthy food options, and fewer tourists.
Around 14:00, the group leaves the market to explore the San Blas Neighborhood, the oldest and most picturesque neighborhood in Cusco. Known as the artists’ haven in the city, this area offers hidden gems perfect for street photography, unknown to many. The tour includes stops at must-see locations like the “Mirador de San Blas,” offering a spectacular view of the city.
At approximately 15:00, there is an option to visit a local, traditional Chicheria, where the drink chicha, made from fermented corn, is served. This spot offers an authentic taste of local culture. Alternatively, the group can visit a local bar with the best view in Cusco, where they can relax and enjoy a pisco sour while overlooking the entire city.
An important note about this tour: Cusco’s dynamic changes daily! Some locations in its streets are not open every day. This element of surprise adds to the experience, as entry to some hidden gems of Cusco is not guaranteed. However, the tour always passes by these places, and if open, they are included in the tour. Fingers crossed!
