The best cooking class in Cusco! - My friends and I truly enjoyed the cooking class by José Lescano. We not only made delicious food and drinks but we learned a lot about fruits and vegetables that grow in Peru. He is very charismatic! A must to do while in Cusco!

Wonderful and delicious - We took this class as a family with our teenage boys and everyone loved it! The food was delicious, instruction was perfect and very educational. It is inspiring us to take more cooking classes as a family! Note, consider doing this on your first day in Cusco--great low-key way to acclimatize!

Stop looking—you’ve found the best cooking class! - you are considering a cooking class in Cusco, stop searching and book this one—you won’t regret it. We’ve done cooking classes all over the world as a way to connect with local culture and cuisine, and our experience at Marcelo Batata with Chef Juan was by far the best one we have ever done. From the moment we arrived, it was clear how much thought and care went into every detail. We started by tasting an incredible variety of fruits unique to Peru (some we’d never even heard of!), while learning about the country’s rich culinary traditions. Chef Juan was the perfect guide—knowledgeable, passionate, and genuinely engaged with every person in the room. His enthusiasm was contagious, and he effortlessly balanced sharing expert techniques with stories that gave us a deeper appreciation for Peruvian food. We made the most delicious ceviche with the highest quality ingredients, crafted our own pisco sours and chilcano de piscos (with a hands-on lesson about the history and nuances of the drinks), explored traditional ingredients you’d find in a local market through an immersive and hands on experience, and made one of Peru's most famous dishes, Lomo Saltado. Our daughters were active participants throughout, and Chef Juan was fantastic about involving them and making the experience fun and accessible for everyone. It wasn’t just a cooking class—it was an immersive, joyful experience that left us feeling more connected to the culture and flavors of Peru. If you’re looking for something more than just a “tourist activity,” this is it. Absolutely worth it. The highlight of our entire trip!

Not your average cooking class - Jose was amazing. We had 2 teens with us and they even enjoyed it. The introduction to Peruvian ingredients was much appreciated. We enjoyed making and then eating 2 classic dishes. Jose gave great instructions. We enjoyed pisco tasting and even appreciated the fact we were supporting the Peruvian natural environment for the birds. I would highly recommend.

Highlight of our trip to Peru - This was by far the biggest highlight of our two weeks in Peru. Jose who ran the course is just fantastic. We had 4.5 hours hours of fun, exploring Peru through its food and drinks. Neither of us are big cooks but we couldn’t fail here. Jose described it more of a culinary experience vs a simple cooking class and he was 100% right. The session starts with tasting of a whole host of fruits from different parts of Peru to understand the geography. You then explore their little market and learn more about the country and its food. The ceviche we made was delicious and enjoyed over a pisco tasting and cocktail making session. They also throw in a couple of tasty snacks from the restaurant. The grand finale was the lomo saltado - this was an incredible experience cooking with fire!! Overall, you will not regret booking this. The class is just so interesting and fun and the food is of the highest quality. I’m so glad we signed up for this one over any of the more budget cooking classes.
