Cusco to Santa Maria
Cusco - Departure is scheduled between 7:45 am and 8:00 am, with the meeting point at the office of Reserve Cusco Srl. The journey begins with a panoramic view of Cusco, followed by a route through Chinchero and Ollantaytambo.
The path leads to the right bank, ascending to an altitude of 4,350 meters above sea level, reaching the mystical Open Malaga, a site where offerings to the land are frequently made. From this point, unless foggy conditions dictate otherwise, the guide will lead the group to disembark and begin biking. This marks the start of one of the world’s most beautiful hikes, comparable to those in Coroico, Bolivia. The descent offers views of the vast Convention Valley, transitioning from dry bush and rugged highland vegetation to temperate zone flora, and finally to the lush forest area. Midway, the group will visit the Inca ruins of Wamanmarka and enjoy lunch along the route.
After approximately 4 hours of biking, the group will reach Santa Maria at an altitude of 1,430 meters. The first day concludes with a stay at a lodge offering basic services and dinner. Nestled in a humid forest rich in flora and fauna, the evening will include a brief recap of the day’s experiences and a discussion of the next day’s trek in coordination with the guests.
Day 2: Santa Maria to Santa Teresa
Santa Teresa - After a nutritious breakfast featuring bananas, oranges, papayas, and other regional fruits (juices), the group will embark on a trekking adventure.
The trail is lush with vegetation, offering a glimpse into the cultivation and harvesting of coffee and the sacred Inca plant, coca. The trek follows original Inca roads, providing a historical perspective on these ancient paths. After experiencing the purest air, there will be an opportunity to visit the thermal and medicinal baths of Santa Teresa.
The journey continues to Santa Teresa, where the group will have a meal and rest, with dinner discussions focusing on the next day’s plans.
Santa Teresa to Aguas Calientes
Aguas Calientes - A slightly later start allows for a vitamin-rich breakfast (juices).
At 9:45 a.m., the group will set off to explore suspension bridges and cross the Vilcanota River (sacred to the Incas) via a cable car.
This thrilling adventure offers a chance to enjoy a variety of butterflies, parrots, birds, and insects, and includes a visit to Inti Watana (Solar Clock). Lunch will be enjoyed at Hydro, featuring high-quality avocados and typical soups. The day concludes at Aguas Calientes, the final rest stop, with dinner and a meeting to prepare for the visit to Machu Picchu.
Machu Picchu to Cusco
Santuario Historico de Machu Picchu - An early start at 5:10 am allows for a trek to witness the sunrise at Machu Picchu.
The hike ascends from 1,980 meters to 2,450 meters above sea level, with breakfast enjoyed en route. The walk takes approximately 1 hour and 10 minutes.
A professional guide will lead a 2-hour tour of Machu Picchu, after which guests can explore independently. At the designated time, guests will descend to the town of hot springs, a trek that takes about 40 minutes. The journey concludes with a train ride back to Cusco, marking the end of a beautiful and comprehensive trip.
