Arrival and First Impressions

As the bus journeyed from Quito to the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve, I felt a mix of excitement and anticipation. The air-conditioned bus provided a comfortable ride, allowing me to rest and prepare for the adventure ahead. Our stop at a quaint area with showers and a delightful breakfast was a welcome surprise, offering a chance to meet locals and fellow travelers. This was the last point of WiFi connectivity, a reminder that we were about to immerse ourselves in the heart of nature.

Upon arrival at the reserve, we were warmly greeted by the native guides, each exuding a deep connection to the land. Our guide, Paul, was a standout, his passion for the wildlife and environment evident from the start. As we boarded the canoe, the river unfolded before us, revealing a tapestry of life—monkeys swinging through the trees, anacondas basking in the sun, and the vibrant calls of exotic birds echoing through the jungle.

The Toucan Lodge, our home for the next few days, was a haven of comfort and community. The shared meals and group introductions fostered a sense of family among us travelers. My shared room was spacious and equipped with all the essentials, including a mosquito net and fans, ensuring restful nights.

Immersed in Nature

The lodge itself was a marvel, a testament to sustainable living with its own produce gardens and 24/7 availability of tea, coffee, and fresh hot chocolate. The hammock area and riverfront, complete with paddle boards, offered perfect spots for relaxation and bonding with fellow adventurers.

Our days were filled with exploration and discovery. While I opted out of the large hike due to mobility issues, the visit to the indigenous village was a highlight. Witnessing their way of life and learning from their wisdom was both humbling and inspiring. The evenings at the Laguna were magical, with sunsets painting the sky in hues of pink and orange, and the sight of pink river dolphins playing in the water was a sight to behold.

The lodge’s commitment to accommodating various dietary needs was commendable, and each meal was a celebration of local flavors, prepared with love and care. The staff’s dedication to our comfort and enjoyment was evident in every interaction.
