Exploring Cyprus: A Journey Through Time and Taste

Drawn by Cyprus’ rich history, I embarked on a shore excursion that promised to unveil the island’s most famed landmarks. From medieval castles to ancient ruins, the journey was a captivating blend of history and storytelling.

A Journey Through Time: The Historic Landmarks of Cyprus

As a former professor of European history, I have always been drawn to the ancient and the storied. Cyprus, with its rich tapestry of history, seemed like the perfect destination for my wife and me to explore. Our journey began at the port of Limassol, where we embarked on the Cyprus Shore Excursion—a tour that promised to unveil the island’s most famed landmarks.

Kolossi Castle: A Medieval Marvel

Our first stop was the imposing Kolossi Castle, a testament to the island’s medieval past. Built by the Crusaders in the 13th century, this three-story fortress stands as a remarkable example of military architecture. As we stood before its stone walls, I couldn’t help but imagine the knights who once roamed its halls, strategizing their next move in the tumultuous landscape of the Middle Ages.

Our guide, Mary, was a fountain of knowledge, weaving tales of the castle’s history with ease. Her insights added depth to the experience, painting a vivid picture of the past. The castle, though a brief stop, set the tone for the rest of our journey—a blend of history and storytelling that would continue to captivate us.

Kourion: Echoes of Antiquity

Next, we ventured to the archaeological site of Kourion, one of Cyprus’ most significant historical discoveries. Perched on a hillside overlooking the southern coast, the ruins of this ancient city-kingdom date back to the Roman and early-Byzantine periods. The site’s amphitheater, with its remarkable acoustics, was a highlight. I couldn’t resist trying the famed coin test, and indeed, the sound of a coin dropping at the stage area resonated clearly to the top rows.

Mary’s commentary brought the ruins to life, as she recounted tales of the city’s past inhabitants and their daily lives. The site was a treasure trove of history, each stone whispering stories of a bygone era. It was a reminder of the enduring legacy of those who came before us, and the importance of preserving such sites for future generations.

Omodos Village and the Taste of Tradition

Our journey continued to the picturesque village of Omodos, nestled in the Troodos Mountains. Known for its wine-making heritage, the village was a charming blend of narrow alleys, stone houses, and vibrant greenery. The Monastery of the Holy Cross, with its connection to St. Helen’s passage to Cyprus, stood proudly in the village’s large plaza, a testament to the island’s religious history.

The highlight of our visit to Omodos was undoubtedly the wine tasting at Lambouri Winery. Here, we sampled a variety of local wines, including the renowned Comandaria, known as the “wine of the kings.” The experience was both educational and indulgent, as we learned about the wine-making process and the unique flavors of Cypriot wines.

Our driver, Vasilli, ensured our comfort throughout the journey, providing water and accommodating our needs with kindness. His professionalism, coupled with Mary’s expertise, made for a seamless and enjoyable experience.

As we returned to Limassol, with time to spare before our cruise ship’s departure, I reflected on the day’s adventures. The Cyprus Shore Excursion had been a perfect blend of history, culture, and relaxation—a journey through time that left us with a deeper appreciation for the island’s rich heritage. For those with a passion for history and a love for exploration, Cyprus offers a treasure trove of experiences waiting to be discovered.
