Dambulla - Upon arriving at Bandaranayake International Airport in Katunayake, a representative will warmly welcome you and accompany you to Dambulla, where you will check into a hotel. After a few hours of relaxation, you can visit the Dambulla Cave Temple.
Dambulla Cave Temple - Situated in the north-central province, this UNESCO World Heritage Site dates back to the 1st century BC. It is an extraordinary complex of five caves, initially used as a refuge by an ancient king who, upon reclaiming his throne, commissioned magnificent carved images within the living rock. Subsequent kings made further enhancements, and the caves now house over 150 images of the Buddha, including a colossal figure spanning 15 meters. Cave inscriptions from the 2nd Century BC are present, and the walls feature numerous paintings, mostly from the Kandy period (early 19th century). This temple is an ideal location to witness the evolution of ancient Sri Lankan art and holds significant historical importance due to its amalgamation of materials from various eras.
Dambulla - Anuradhapura
Anuradhapura - After enjoying a delicious breakfast and packing your belongings, you will head to Anuradhapura before midday. Upon arrival, you can explore the ancient city of Anuradhapura, the first kingdom of Sri Lanka.
After the tour, you will check into the hotel for an overnight stay and dinner.
Anuradhapura Stupas Scenic Point - Founded in the 5th century BC, according to the ancient Sinhala Chronicle Mahavamsa, Anuradhapura was a model of urban planning with designated areas for huntsmen, scavengers, heretics, and foreigners. There were separate cemeteries for different castes, as well as hotels and hospitality services. A unique feature of Buddhist Sri Lanka is the stupa, which enshrined relics of the Buddha and was an object of veneration. Anuradhapura is home to many significant stupas, including Abayagiri, Jethawanarama, Thuparamaya, Lovamahapaya, Mirisavatiya, Ruwanwaliseya, Jayasri Maha Bodhiya, and Isurumuniya.
Anuradhapura - Polonnaruwa - Sigiriya-Kandy
Polonnaruwa - After breakfast, you will explore another ancient city of Sri Lanka, the Polonnaruwa archaeological site.
In the evening, you will visit Sigiriya Lion Rock for observation. Afterwards, you will proceed to Kandy to continue your journey.
Polonnaruwa - Another UNESCO World Heritage Site, Polonnaruwa was established in the 12th century by a prince from the Rohana region (Southern Sri Lanka) who ascended to the throne as King Prakrama Bahu the Great. He transformed Polonnaruwa into a capital worthy of his authority and ambition, showcasing his prowess as a warrior and administrator. During his reign, he constructed a nine-mile-long dam, creating the “Sea of Parakrama” to harvest rainwater for cultivation during dry periods, demonstrating Sri Lanka’s irrigation brilliance. Many projects from this prosperous era still function today. The vast ruins in Polonnaruwa stand as a testament to his power and glory.
Sigiriya The Ancient Rock Fortress - Sigiriya, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a spectacular rock fortress and one of Sri Lanka’s major attractions. The most impressive features of this unique complex include the Water Gardens, the Frescoes of beautiful maidens, the Mirror Wall with ancient graffiti, the Lion platform, and the Summit, which was entirely covered by buildings during Sigiriya’s peak. Built by King Kashyapa (477-495 A.D), the “Lion Rock” is a citadel of exceptional beauty, rising 200 meters from the scrub jungle. The rock was the innermost stronghold of the 70-hectare fortified town, surrounded by a moat, rampart, and extensive gardens. The world-renowned frescoes (originally 500, with only 19 remaining today) are painted in earth pigments on plaster and are located in a sheltered pocket of the rock, accessible by a spiral stairway.
Kandy - Colombo
Kandy - After breakfast, you will embark on a city tour of Kandy. Following the tour, you will participate in the ceremony at the Temple of the Tooth Relic and observe the Kandy temple. The Temple of the Tooth is the most important site for present-day Buddhists as it houses the sacred tooth relic of Buddha, known as “Sri Dalada Maligawa.” It is renowned for its carvings and beautiful art unique to Sri Lanka. The most significant part of the Dalada Maligawa is the octagon (Pathirppuwa). Thousands of visitors line up daily to witness its majesty. Kandy is also one of the most beautiful cities in Sri Lanka, with its picturesque lake built by its last king, surrounding hills, devales, the oldest being the Natha Devale from the 14th century, and the palace of the last king of Kandy, which now serves as the district courts and archaeological museum.
Royal Botanical Gardens - Afterwards, you will visit the Peradeniya Royal Botanical Garden with your local guide. The Royal Botanical Garden in Peradeniya is one of the finest botanical gardens in Sri Lanka and among the most beautiful in Asia. Located just 6 km from Kandy, the second-largest city in Sri Lanka, the garden is vast and well-organized. It is renowned for its collection of over 300 varieties of orchids, spices, medicinal plants, and palm trees, and it houses the National Herbarium. The botanical garden spans 147 acres and is managed by the Division of National Botanic Gardens of the Department of Agriculture. The origins of the Botanic Gardens date back centuries. The Classical Avenue of Palms is a notable feature, and the Cannonball Tree, planted by King George V of the United Kingdom and Queen Mary in 1901, holds historical significance.
