- Dambulla - Situated in central Sri Lanka, Dambulla is famous for its UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Dambulla Cave Temple Complex. These ancient caves, carved into a massive granite rock, contain over 150 magnificent Buddha statues and vibrant frescoes dating back to the 1st century BCE. Serving as a spiritual haven for over two millennia, Dambulla’s caves provide visitors with a glimpse into the island’s rich cultural and religious history, making it an essential destination for travelers seeking enlightenment and cultural immersion.
- Yapahuwa Rock Fortress - Located in Kurunegala, in the North Western Province of Sri Lanka, the ancient Yapahuwa fortress rises 90 meters above the surrounding plains. Constructed by King Buwanekabahu the First as the capital of Sri Lanka in 1301, today, the Royal residence, the Temple of Tooth Relic, and the battle defenses lie in ruins.
The ruined walls of Yapahuwa form a rough semicircle, with the ends joining the base of the steep-sided rocky granite outcrop. The outer fortification, an earthen rampart extending about a mile, stands approximately 20 feet high. Above the rampart are the remnants of a brick wall that was built to protect the interiors. Surrounding the rampart was a moat. Access to the fortress was through three gates connected to three causeways. Within this rampart was an inner fortification: a stone wall, 12 feet high and about 500 yards long, with a moat outside it and two gates.
- Reswehera (Sesseruwa) Rajamaha Viharaya | රැස්වෙහෙර (සැස්සේරුව) රජ මහා විහාරය - The Rasvehera statue shares similar profiles with the Aukana Buddha statue, yet there are significant differences between the two. The Aukana Buddha statue is taller, standing at 46 feet, while Sasseruwa is 36 feet tall. The Rasvehera statue is carved into a rectangular frame in the rock boulder without the head decoration, the Siraspatha, but features dots for the hair. The Aukana statue stands on an exquisite lotus symbol, whereas the Rasvehera statue stands on a plain rectangular stone pedestal. The symbolic Mudras (gestures) depicted here differ from each other. Upon comparing all visual aspects, the sculptured features on the Rasvehera Buddha statue suggest it was left unfinished for reasons known only to the great unknown sculptor.
- Avukana Buddha Statue - The Aukana Buddha Statue, in Asisa Mudra or the “posture of blessing,” is carved from a rock boulder. The statue is carved in the round, connected at the back to the rock boulder. The delicate and skillful carving of the Buddha’s robe humanizes and modestly reveals the underlying form of his body, while the face’s impassive expression projects an aura of spiritual supremacy.
It is said that the alignment of the statue is such that a raindrop on the nose would fall straight down to a small depression carved between the toes. The Aukana Buddha Statue is a masterpiece of a colossal Buddha Statue by an unknown sculptor: the serene expression of the statue, the gracefully carved robe with neat pleats, brings a delicateness that could hardly be molded into a rock. The impassive expression of the face reflects supreme spirituality.
