Dana Nature Reserve, Shobak Castle, and Little Petra
Dana Nature Reserve - The Dana Biosphere Reserve boasts a diverse array of wildlife, featuring unique flora and fauna from the desert, Mediterranean forests, and the dry Russian steppes. The village of Dana offers a stunning view of the Dana Valley. Settled around 4000 BC, archaeological evidence shows that the Paleolithic, Egyptian, Nabatean, and Roman civilizations inhabited the area due to its fertile soil, water springs, and strategic location. It is one of Jordan’s oldest and most unique nature reserves - a delightful sight to behold.
Shobak Castle - Among the major Crusader castles in Jordan, Al-Shobak Castle, known in European languages as Montreal Castle, meaning the royal mountain, is situated on the eastern side of Wadi Araba. It sits atop a rocky conical mountain, overlooking dense trees and valleys where water once flowed. The citadel is located 120 km south of Karak and 35 km north of Petra, the Nabatean capital. The castle played a significant role during the Crusades by disrupting transportation routes for commercial convoys and military campaigns between Egypt and Damascus. Its importance waned after it was captured by the Ayyubids.
Little Petra - Little Petra is the area behind Petra, serving as the main caravan stop after crossing the rift valley from Africa.
Petra and Wadi Rum
Petra - Begin the main visit to Petra early in the morning, continuing until around 2-4 PM. Petra, the capital of the Arab Nabateans, is one of the world’s most renowned archaeological sites and Jordan’s premier tourist attraction. It showcases ancient architecture from various civilizations and is a city entirely carved from pink rock. Petra is a unique testament to the oldest Arab civilization (the Nabataean civilization), carved by the Nabataean Arabs over 2000 years ago. It is one of the Seven Wonders of the World and a testament to the rich and creative ancient Arab civilizations. Many scholars and orientalists refer to Petra as the “lost city” due to its late introduction to the world, and the English poet Bergen described it as the amazing eastern city, The Pink City like no other.
Wadi Rum Protected Area - After visiting Petra, proceed to Wadi Rum and spend the night there.
Wadi Rum is one of the world’s most beautiful deserts, offering breathtaking and enchanting landscapes. Its history is ancient, with many notable figures praising its beauty and goodness. Numerous Bedouin tribes have inhabited this valley. Wadi Rum gained fame after the movie Lawrence of Arabia was filmed there in the 1960s. Several tourism promotional campaigns have highlighted its beauty, making it a significant tourist destination for international travelers.
Wadi Rum - Red Sea and Dead Sea
Wadi Rum Protected Area - Enjoy a two-hour Jeep tour in Wadi Rum.
Dead Sea Region - Travel from Rum to the Gulf of Aqaba - the Red Sea, and then proceed to the Dead Sea. There is no stop at the Gulf of Aqaba - Red Sea during winter (November to March) due to limited daylight. The Dead Sea is a closed salt lake located in the Jordan Valley gorges, on the border between Jordan and historical Palestine. It is renowned for being the lowest point on the Earth’s surface and is characterized by its high salinity. The Dead Sea is vital for industry and tourism in the region, as its water composition differs from natural water. The historical and tourism significance of the Dead Sea Basin area is attributed to the sea itself and its shores, which house important archaeological and religious sites such as Masada, Khirbet Qumran, and the Prophet Lot’s Cave.
